Well, today I was looking through some mercury dimes, for errors and variety, and I found a 1942d 2/1 coin in about vf-30 condition! I'd post pictures, but it's really hard if not impossible to see the overdate without some sort of magnification. This has made my day. I am 100% sure that I am not mistaken :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

The best part is, I was about to throw this in a lot with other coins and sell it on ebay, but I got bored studying for finals, and decided to take a break and look for the minute chance of finding an error in my mercury dimes!

I just checked my trusty RedBook and the price of a VF-20 is $800 and an EF-40 is $900!!!

Way to go...I hope its the real deal...I've never seen any fakes so I hope you are safe...
I had almost the same thing happen to me...I was looking at about 300 Junk Silver dollars and I found a Peace dollar with the date of 1928...it was in poor grade maybe AG and I flip it all around and didn't see much wrong...called my dealer and he said that it would be worth $100 maybe more but to make sure the mintmark just wasn't really worn....I had to take it under a Microscope under 10x+20x and sure enough...there was a S....it didn't make me too happen but there wasn't much I could do about it then!

That is a great find Zane. My dealer found one when he was a kid. He was at an arcade and got it in change for a dollar. Back then it was worth $10.00

After I get it authenticated, I hope to trade it for a 1942/41 p since the overdate is much more noticeable, and therefore much cooler to myself.

Wow. I was happy when I found a 1964 and a bunch of 1965-1969 kennedy half dollars in a roll.

Now that find is one for the book. Congrats!

Speedy, do I need to post a close up of the date, or just a picture of the coin? The overdate is really hard to see without a loupe.

The way I understand it the only way to tell a real one is by the date....at least that is how the book says....it says there should be a little bit of the 1 showing at the bottom....just a tad.....

Just a photo of the date I would say.....I'm glad to hear that is is hard to see without a loupe...that is a good sign.

These pictures are the best I can do. I'm not even sure you can see the overdate from the scans.

Hey Zane...Thanks for the scan....we are going to vote and get you a camera :D

    1942/41 D Dimes
The fundamental circumstances that created the overdate Philadelphia issue apple to the Denver overdate as well, but there are some slight differnces in the area of the date. Most important, the underlying "1" is not as apparent as on the P issue. The key to this coin is the portion of the "1" under the left side of the "2". This "chip" of the "1" must be present. On the top left portion of the "2" is the rement of the serif of the "1". As with the P issue, the "4" in the date is notched. The "D" mintmark is repunched.
Alterations are not as prevalent for this coin as they are in the P issue.

That sounds like the coin I have. I am upgrading the ram on my computer tommorrow, so I should be able to do a super high resolution scan ( I can't currently, as my computer doesn't have enough memory) which means I should be able to zoom in real close on the date, and have it nice and clear. If it works out I will post updated photos. I should be getting a digital camera for christmas ( a very nice one) and then I'll be able to take all sorts of photos.

I'd venture to guess that I'm not the only person on this website who wants or got a digital camera for the sole purpose of photographing coins.

I didn't know about the d being repunched, but mine definitely has a repunched d. It's only apparent on the inside of the D though.

Tried....but when you have people wanting you to take photos and are willing to pay a few hundred sometimes for just a day of photos (Weddings)....I don't know if I would want to pass up either...I help her every-now-and-then

    I also just learned that.....
