Would this be a good idea?

Found this on ebay, and was wondering what you more experienced people have to say before I pull the trigger. It's an NGC PF69 silver quarter proof of the state I live in for $15. I've messaged the seller and he says that if you covered the grade, no one would know the difference between the PF69 and a PF70. I think it would be a nice coin for my first slab, but I don't know if that's a good price. If the price is average, I'll probably pass on it and save the $15 toward another coin later. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

I don't want somebody else to buy it if it's a good deal haha, or am I being too paranoid/irrational?

Someone on this forum may have one in the same condition at a lower price.

Most seem to be in the $15 to $25 range but watch the shipping costs. Some are quite high.

Oh buddy! The thread title REALLY caught my attention. In my two professions I've heard that phrase uttered thousands of times, and it usually results in someone getting hurt or going to jail shortly thereafter :) Thanks for the laugh!

On to your question. I think what the seller meant by that comment ("...if you covered the grade...") was that it generally takes a microscope to tell the difference between a 69 and a 70; he wasn't being crooked.

As to the price, it depends on the specific coin, so we'd have to know the state.

Haha yeah, sorry for the generic title, but it seemed best at the time. Should I post things like this in the "What's it worth?" section next time, or is that more for coins that you own? Thanks guys, and ikandiggit, it's $15 shipped =)

    EDIT: It's Florida btw.

It sounds like a decent price. The other thing is the slabbing company. If it's a generic one, make sure the coin grade is accurate. If it's one of the top graders, no problem.

It's NGC. Now that I search all listings, I see some for $8 shipped with no bids on them..however, they don't look "frosty". Is that possible or is it just bad photography?

All the modern proofs are NGC ultra cameo, i.e. "frosted". No coin shows or shops in your area? You find a better deal locally. The 69's are dirt cheap, they are just failed junk.

Ah, really? I'll have to call around and see if they have any. Or maybe I could just offer the ebay seller $10 shipped or something?

Really I wouldn't waste any money on modern day proofs unless they are going for melt. I don't see any reason why when you can spend that $15 on a nice Barber Half or LC etc. JMHO

He wants his home state proof.

Yes, I think it's kind of neat to have, and if I get it for $10 it could always be resold or traded for about that much it seems.

thats interesting you were thinking of making that your first slabbed purchase. i was going to pick up a PA PF69 ngc coin, as my first slabbed coin.:)

i still haven't purchased my first graded coin, i keep getting raw ones. i sorta want a special first slabbed coin. i guess to quote the movie "40 year old virgin", i am "putting the slab on the pedestal". meaning it shouldn't really matter as much.

although the Florida state quarter is much cooler then the PA, if i was from Florida i would have probably done it. now the Hawaii state quarter is the best looking one, imo.

Make sure you get a DCAM or Deep Cameo designation with the PF69 grade. All high end modern coins that are worth anything need this designation. If so, $15 would be a good price. If not, the price is high.

Why not just cherrypick a nice looking proof set so you get not only all the quarters, but all the regular issues of that year in 69ish grade. I suspect you can find the entire set for about the same $15.

Said a bit differently, why do you want/need a slab?

NGC uses the UCAM designation. PCGS uses the DCAM designation. Yes, $15 would be high if it isn't UCAM, but you have to keep in mind that it costs a minimum of $12.50 plus shipping and insurance to have one graded yourself. Also, the seller really doesn't know what he's talking about when it comes to distinguishing between PF69 & PF70 where moderns are concerned. It's very easy to tell the difference. The only thing I will add is that it is pointless paying some of the outrageous prices for PF70's when you can get the PF69's so much cheaper, and for someone who can't tell the difference it shouldn't matter.

If you add the shipping cost to the asking price and it comes out to be more than $25, look elsewhere.
