Is 199.95 a good price for an Uncirculated 1884 CC in the orignal government holder? And what is a good price for those GSA Morgans? tia
Like with any other coin - it depends on the condition of the coin. For most 1884-CC GSA dollars $199 is a bit steep. For others - it is dirt cheap. If you wish to know what prices are for generic examples of these coins get yourself a copy of Coin World and check the buy ads. There are several dealers who advertise every week what they will pay for these coins. Or you can check the realized prices for them on ebay. Dozens of them are sold every day.
I see these coins advertised for around $195, ungraded. Then the same website will have them graded for a hefty price. My assumption is that the coins they are selling ungraded are probably low end condition, and wouldn't reach MS-63\64 or they would be graded and selling for thousands instead of hundreds.
You can find a lot of things advertised for high prices. But you can buy them for less if you take the time to look. The coin you mentioned can be purchased in MS63 condition for about $160 - to $180 all day long. All you have to do is look around.
For some reason the GSA Morgans have shot up in value in the past few years. About 10 years ago they bid in the $55-$65 range in the greysheet. Now there's buyers everywhere at $150-$160. $199.99 is an ok retail price for a common date like 1884 but know that you'll probably get a coin that will grade ms60 or 61. Also, like GDJMSP said, if you shop around you can probably find one at a lower price. Nick
