I just purchased a lot in which this coin was shown as being a part of it. This one seems to have the diagnostics of a 1916, though it is really worn. Opinions?

Send it to NGC for attribution. I'm rather interested to know if that is a 1916.

Johnny , you may want to closely compare what your coins areas look like compared to these 2 . The 1916 has 3 very distinct markers that a 1917 does not have.Above the head, the curl , & the drape of the gown. I cant tell from your pics & its always better to do in hand. Good luck.

Would a type 1 1916 have any value w/o a date? I have a type 1 but not sure if it's 1916 but I would look more careful if it still has more value than scrap silver!

To my knowlege there isn't a type 2 in 1916 - the change wasn't made until 1917, so the 1917 is the coin with two types (one uncovered breast and one covered).

Any 1916 SLQ is worth some bank! If it is one, don't sell it for spot! Like the OP, if you can't read the date I'd submit it to NGC for attribution.

go over on PCGS forum and look at all the 1916/17 SLQ's questions. someone had one recently just like yours - worn down to a numb and it was a 1916. It looks like you might need better pictures. maybe you might want to post over there too ???

here a couple links and it can spread out many different ways

http://forums.collectors.com/ and example - type 1916 on the search in the US coin forum and will bring up many post on 1916/17 SLQ's

i would suspect it is a 1916 because of the shield rivots. Snowman

Yes a dateless 1916 would probably be worth at least a few hundred dollars.

    perhaps, Condor..
but look at the drapery fold, that is the type of the 1917.

While buzzing through the threads today found this one.

I'm making this up as I go along so my humble opinion should be held as moot.

Thanks for the posts about the obv markers, but I look for the Rev difference on 16 vs 17's.

No stars under the eagle and it's beak is placed below the "R" in dollar on the 16.

Stars under the eagle and the beak is ABOVE the "R" in later issues.

If this is correct, this example should be checked out by a committee (something I usually hate) for certification.

Sorry about using two photos but I can't seem to "undo" one of them.

Do you want to make bets on that? I'm quite confident this is a 1916 from the pictures I posted alone. I could be wrong, but I dont think so. If the coin I posted is a 1917, it's been severely worked on to look like a 1916.

Those are good diagnostics budgood, though there are several that are very clear from a distance even on a coin with severe wear. Here is a comparison between a FR2 1917, and my other FR2 ANACS certified 1916.

Well,it seems you have a handle on the dianostics-
From the initial post I assumed you did not & I was pointing out 3 very easy ones.

    Good luck.

I appreciate your help. I feel like I have a handle on the diagnostics, but was looking for some confirmation as to whether or not the picture leans more towards a 1917, or a 1916. I feel confident that there is enough diagnostic details to confirm that it is a 1916, but others on this forum don't seem to agree.:smile This picture was clipped from a lot of 40 slqs on ebay. I will have the coin in hand probably by the end of the week for better pictures.

If you post the pictures, we can help you out! Or compare to the diagnostic pictures that budgood and I displayed.

So is a type 1 1917 worth anything? I know I have a type 1 but need to verify the year by the indicators if I can. I will know when I get home.
