Found this in a roll from a box i picked up at the bank today. Referenced it against coppercoins, and it looks like the 1955P-1DO-002, though i wasnt able to be positive about the die markers. Anyway, what do you think? Let me know if i need better pictures.
so since everyone has been quiet on this, am i right to believe that this IS indeed ddo-02 for this year? wish i knew how to take pictures better so you could all see it, but there is light to strong doubling on most of the letters IGWT, and at least the "BE" in liberty. no doubling at all on the date.
Well I was going to say no at first, but after looking at "coppercoins.com" I'm not so sure now. Can you get a picture of "IN"??? -I think that's the easiest diagnostic to confirm it by.
sure thing. ill get a clear shot of it for you(hopefully lol), and upload it tonight when i get home.
Did you get a chance to check out "coppercoins.com"??? - Or is that where you got your info to start with? That site is very helpful, and has very sharp pictures for comparisons.
yep, that was the first place i went to. the doubling is VERY similiar to what is on coppercoins, i just couldnt find the diagnostic marks on the back(the die dot, and not too sure how to tell die scracthes apart from normal wear)
The die dot you're referring to, may only be on the later die state coins. -Something that developed during the life of the die. -Your coin may be from an earlier die state before the dot appeared. Also, die scratches show up as raised lines on a coin. Normal wear scratches are incused -or lower than the coins surface.
ok, that sounds easy enough to spot. ill have to take another look at it tonight. the letters in GOD, WE, and TRUST on my coin look almost exactly like coppercoins. The IN is very similiar, but a little hard to tell as the IN is a little worn(or at least the doubling appears to be). Same with BER in liberty. Doubling looks to be worn a bit. Definately dosnt look "shelf-like" though. Ive come across a ton of MD, and this just dosnt look like anything ive seen before. I need to learn to use my camera better...im a bit challenged when it comes to taking pictures lol.
At first glance the "IN" in the picture from coppercoins looks like MD, but if you look at the "N" especially all of the points of both N's are seperated. Proving that this coin is a double die. If it were MD all the points would be connected, like an extension of the same letter. BTW your pictures look just as good, or better than most everybody elses on this site. What kind of loupe did you use to take them? I ususally use a 30X 21 MM, but for the sharpest pictures I use a 40X 25MM. I was hoping to use the 40X for capturing the whole coin, but it won't quite do it for the coins I like the most - Buffalo Nickels. It'll work for pennys and dimes though.
im currently using a 20x21mm loupe and a 60x(or 45x) mini microscope with a really TINY lens, but i have a 40x25mm loupe on the way
Heres a clear closeup of "IN". the more i look at it, and compared to the cherrypickers guide and coppercoins, im pretty convinced this is the real thing.
If it only appears in the word "IN" then I am going to say it's MD. If you read the explanation from copper coins "Nice distorted and clockwise pivoted (from K-6) doubling shows on the motto, LIBERTY, and the eyelid. This doubled die has proven to be extremely scarce and very difficult to obtain. So check the word "liberty" and the eyelid and if that appears doubling then you do indeed have a rare find.
the doubling is on the entire obverse, except the date, and its light on liberty. Its very strong on the GOD, W, TRUS, and light on IN(as you can see from the picture). I wasnt able to locate any of the die scratches, or die gourge(for MDS or LDS) either. I didnt notice anything on the eyelid, though i didnt really look at it.
