Value for this 1892-S Barber Quarter

Thanks for taking the time to evaluate this coin. What are your thoughts on me sending it to NCS/NGC? I am a member of the Collectors Society through the NGC website and they have forums there. I have submitted a question with the picture of the coin to the NCS people to see what they think about conserving the coin and hopefully getting it graded by NGC.

I started coin collecting at a suggestion of a good friend in Feb. My wife was expecting a baby last May (the baby is now 8 months old and I couldn't be happier) and my friend said you should order Mint and Proof sets from the mint on a subscription for the baby. Well I got hooked and here I am branching out.

I would like to put a really nice collection away for her so I will be saving this coin for a long time to come. One of the big reasons I would like to try to get it graded is to make sure their was no cleaning or frosting prior and know exactly what this rates.

Any thoughts you have would be appreciated.

By comparison to the more experienced members around here, I'm a complete rookie. Any opinions I may express are merely my own, and may not reflect the true trends or realities in the collecting hobby.

Having said that, I have a weakness for nice Barber quarters, as well as variations. I prefer my coins to be raw. Your coin strikes me on all three counts, and I'm maybe a little biased as a result. Your plan to go with NCS/NGC is, in my opinion, the best way to ensure the maximum future protection and value of that specific coin.

I think I will go the NCS/NGC route. I already have some free early bird submissions coming for NGC so might as well pay the extra 20 bucks for the NCS service.

On those Barber quarter. Wow . Wish my obverse of my 1892-S looked that good. Have a good night.

 

i would send the coin to anacs that way you can see what theyre new slabs will be like and get a net grade for the damage.

 

Nope---they don't give net grades anymore...they would list the problem but no Net grades....when I talked to Mr Taylor he said the reason was that it saved time...they can now get your coins back faster and there has never been a set stander for NET grades...so its kindof up to the graders.

I was planning to send it to NCS for conservation and sent over to NGC to try to get it graded. Good chance it will come back in a body bag.
Was then thinking of sending it of to ANACS to get it graded if NGC gives it a no grade. I was reading this paragraph by ANACS and this is why I thought they would give it a grade.

"Problem coins graded: ANACS is the only major grading service to grade cleaned, corroded, damaged, repaired, and other problem coins. The details grade reflects the amount of remaining detail on the coin, balancing actual wear with remaining sharpness. The net grade deducts a given number of grading points from the details grade, depending on the severity of the coin's problems"

 

They haven't changed their site because they are getting a whole new on in JAN but they don't do NET grades anymore....too bad too...I think that was a great service of theirs!

But let me say that ANACS is a great grading Co. and I suggest them for most coins...if NCS can do something for your coin I say go for it...but if they can't send it to ANACS (you say that word... AnnX...it took me awhile to find that out) as they are cheaper and faster.

gd, i'm not trying to degrade you, but i think the frosting thing is about the most retarded thing i've heard since the yo' momma jokes in 3rd grade. sorry

You don't even need an airbrush. I thought about this for a while after GD mentioned it, and I have already come up with a way to frost a coin. I tried it out, and it worked. I'm not going to mention details, as the last thing I want is some unscrupulous person to run across this post and then start frosting coins. You'd truly be surprised how easy it is to do.

 

Also, I reckon the way I thought of works and looks even better than an airbrush would. I've been reading a lot about doctoring coins, and have even thought of some stuff myself, so that I can make sure I can recognize these coins. You'd be surprised just how many coins have been doctored. Some people are so good, especially at retoning that you won't be able to tell.

 

I met someone, who even can remove signs of cleaning by etching away a few microns of a coin using a certain deadly chemical compound.

Well Got my 1892-S Barber quarter back from NCS yesterday. It took about a month. Qiuarter was not cleaned or frosted previously. It did not grade by NGC due to the damage on the cheek. Ended up being slabbed by NCS as Uncirculated Details with Enviromental Damage. I am really happy with the service they provided. The quarter looks great and will be staying in my collection. I tried to post pictures or a scan but keep getting file to big. I will try get the file size down. If anyone is thinking of using NCS for conservation of a coin I can certainly highly recommend them.
