Hello. I am a new collector and have a handful of misaligned (MAD) coins--mostly dimes, nickels and pennies. I know it is common to find MAD coins, particularly dimes. So, what I am wondering is if they are considered cool, or is this something that causes the coin collecting world to yawn. (I am, for sure, going to keep the dimes minted before 1965.) Thanks!
There are some that are worth keeping and others worth spending. Here are a few examples of what to watch for: The first one is a borderline one, but not quite what you want to save: http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/coop49/1996-P_MAD_Nickel_Mellisadawn.jpg The second one is a keeper. Why? The devices fall over the edge of the coin: http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/coop49/MAD_Value_for_cole317_Cent.jpg The third one is also a keeper: http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/coop49/1975-D_mad_DANIEL_R__DEVICES_MISSING.jpg So when the devices fall over the rim, they are keepers. If not, spend them.
Thanks for your input, everyone, and the pictures, Coop. This is really helpful. I have some that are like the 2nd and 3rd pictures, so I'll keep those. I'll use the others to buy dollar coins or something. Thanks again.
