Hello Everyone. I don't follow currency much but the lady at the local convenience store sold me this one for five dollars and I'm not sure if it's valuable or not.

    Any Help?

Looks to have been folded and put away..classic tri-fold as it appears to me.

    Agree with USS656 $$ point.

    Yeah, nice work.

Look at the scroll above Lincoln's head and above, "United States of America." Notice it doesn't say, "Federal Reserve Note" like modern bills do. It says, "Silver Certificate." At the time, each paper dollar was backed by a dollar's worth of real silver. One could turn in a paper bill for a silver dollar at any time. That was the standard when gold became too expensive to use as the standard.

Now, of course, our money isn't backed by anything tangible. It's all about what it's worth in relationship to other countries' money.

It also amazes me that the note is worth maybe 2 times face today while the $5 in silver you could have redeemed it for is worth ~$80.

Use to work at a toll booth crossing the Hudson river. I have since retired. You don't know how much stuff I found as a toll collector. I have found silver cert, US notes, Old Fed. Reserve Notes, even lots of Web fed notes when they first came out. I have even found a gold coin, a morgan silver dollar and so many clad halves when we were getting 55cents a coin. we were turning them in by the coffee can. Now almost nothing.

I forgot to mention that this note appears to be a Wide I variety..with face plate numbers 2035 thru 2171. You should look at the reverse and look for a back plate number of 2006 or lower.

If by Back Plate Number, you mean the four digit number at the lower right hand corner of the note between FIVE DOLLARS and the FIVE in the corner of the note , it is the number 1816.
