coin collecting will still continue. people's attitudes and likes change and warp based on a person's own quirkiness and curiosity. me, i started off on collecting comics first (X-Men to be exact).

it was a few more days going back to that comic shop that i noticed that in a little corner they have these old silver coins for sale. i was amazed at it the first time. i tried it a little bit at first then i stopped. then i restarted it again and the feeling died out again. it took around 3-4 times of this on and off situation before i really my coin collecting was non-stop at to the present.

i am intrigued with the phrase "genetically driven". though i do not know how to rationalize this, i am more prone to believe that it has to do with indirect or direct influences of people around you. in my case, my aunt likes to collect books and fossilized rocks, my dad on the other hand has a huge collection of audio tapes. when it comes to friends, i got to meet with great people that collect comics, toys, and then coins.

Agree 100% that there will always be collectors/hoarders.

Coin collecting has one thing going for it - it IS money. People value money - and I think there will always be new people coming in thinking they can "make a buck" - so in that sense, it'll keep going for awhile.

    Otherwise, it will "cool" off.

Lots of people think stamp collecting is dead. It really isn't. In fact, there are several very lively alternative auction sites to ebay for stamp collectors. I cannot say the same thing for coin collectors.

I think the change in the future will be much more towards "how much can I make off this or that" than discussing the history of the Carson City mint...
