http://forums.collectors.com/messageview.cfm?catid=26&threadid=783301 I'm normally somewhat impressed with Hobo Nickels, but these just blew me away! P.S. Post some if you got em'
Great Pics.....That Koi Pond nickel is amazing! I wish I had some to post. Here is another good link that might be worth checking out..... http://www.hobonickels.org/
This is one I was lucky enough to get from Mr. Bill Zach..it was for my son AJ and he treasures it greatly! I will have to scan it and post it tomorrow.. it's a beauty RickieB
He does, the designer/carver/engraver (don't know what exactly you'd call it) for the last one has the obverse credited to Bill Zach.
Hunt1, a "hobo nickel" is a form of art that was common in the 1920s and '30s. Folks would take a nickel (which were buffalo nickels in those days) from circulation and carve them with their own artwork. The result is the pictures in the OP's link.
The Koi Pond looks better in hand. The depth is amazing on it. The workmanship on these is top notch.
Compared to your link, here's one from the ghetto!! I have another one but it's not on this laptop. :hail: BTW: Hobo has a real beauty up there, also has anyone noticed the price of these now on ebay?
This past Friday and Saturday, Hawaii held is 20th All-Collectors Show 2010 at the Honolulu Blaisdell Center. Some 141 vendors occupied 530 booths, of which 17 were coin vendors. Many of the non-coin vendors also were offering coins along with their other collectibles. In addition to those items on my coin want-list, yours truly spent 5-hours carefully searching for a hobo nickle. Only one was being offered and that was by the island's largest dealer. The u-do-it coin holder was marked for an asking of $300.00. Since I already have one original and one replica hobo, I wasn't about to seriously make an offer for this coin. Asking was just too high.
Someone on another forum told me about hobo nickels. I decided to do a search on CoinTalk about Hobo nickels and I found this thread. These just blow me away. I think that I will start collecting these hobo nickels because I love the art work on a lot of them. I will probably start out with the modern hobo nickels if I can find one that is within my budget on ebay. I am primary a silver art bar collector but I am loving the artwork on these hobo nickels. Hopefully I can find some hobo nickels when I go to my next coin show. Thanks for sharing and thanks for starting this thread.
