So I was going through change at work last night when I came across an odd-looking Canadian quarter. Upon further looking it was a 1999 with December written next to it. I (of course) came home and first thing I did was look it up. Turns out that in 1999 Canada issued 12 different quarter designs. One for each month commemorating the millenium. I had no idea these were ever made so needless to say I was very intrigued (sp?). I wish the US had done something like that instead of the State Quarter thing. If anybody knows of a good site to learn about these (and other Canadian millenium commemorative if they exist) please let me know. Just figured I'd share the cool fact.
i didn't know about these either. i was in canada pretty much every weekend of that summer and the summer after and don't remember these. i was young and not looking for them, so thats probably why. i am going to look these up, thanks for sharing!
Well they also made 12 more coins in 2000 to with the millunium series! I also have a 2000 millunium commemorative from my post office!
Wow. Thats really cool. I'm gonna have to find me a set of each of those. Were they released for general circualtion much or were they mostly collectors items?
Why did Canada mint coins in 1999 to commemorate the new millenium? The new millenium (and the 21st century) began when the calendar flipped over from December 31, 2000 to January 1, 2001. Silly Canucks! :hail:
Haha. An excellent point. I guess they figured the 1999-2000 4 digit year change would be more popular than the 1 digit year change from 2000-2001.
The 12 coins in 1999 and the other 12 coins made in 2000 were all released into gereral circulation. But You could bye sets of them and lots of other milunium colectibles from the mint those years.
I live in Detroit and I have been trying to collect them for years. They do turn up from time to time in change. So far I have found four of them, all from 2000. They are really cool.
They still show up in regular circulation here in Canada, but by now the ones still in circulation are pretty scratched up. You'll have no trouble filling your sets of these and other special-issue Canadian quarters (there's been so many, I miss the caribou) by checking out eBay. They're all for sale routinely for face value plus a bit of postage. More details about special edition circulation Canadian quarters can be had at the mint and wikipedia.

it's the whole penny/cent thing. technically it's a cent, but people still call it a penny. technically, 2001 was the start of the new millenium, but people said 2000 was the new millenium. don't argue it, just go with it.
