I just inherited a leather wallet full of confederate notes, as well as two United States twenty-five cent bills that are dated in the 1840s. I also have an odd little note from the "branch Bank of Tennessee," dated 1862, for five cents. I am really just trying to figure out if any of this stuff is worth anything, or is it best to hang onto it? It has been in my family lo these many years and I guess I am asking if these are just family keepsakes or if they should be in the hands of a "real" collector?
Well what I can suggest to you is that you scan the notes 1 by 1 and post them here so we can take a look. Many of us here collect fractionals and a few of us CSA Notes, however, we can point you in the right direction. RickieB
OK, great, thank you for the advice. I am going to scan these notes and hopefully post a few of them tonight!
OK, I finally figured out how to get these things scanned in. So first, here are the two US bills I have, [/ATTACH]
There are so many Confederate bills, I will not bore you with too many, I have about 20 total. I noticed that the ones dated 1864 have two sides while the ones with earlier dates are single sided and on those single-sided notes it looks like someone mounted them on something once long ago, because there are remnants of paper left that they must have been glued to. Anyway, here are two of them:
I assure you we wont be bored The second one looks a bit funny is the paper the same quality as the first one? I dont have the first one so without looking it up I'm thinking it might be a bit on the rarer side. Too bad about the backing though.
regardless of condition they are nice, and trust me, most people will want you to scan the rest! i got a question on these also..are the confeds with no reverse side authentic and not reproductions? did they put out notes with just a front? i only ask because i have one and always thought it was some kinda fake? i won't take away anymore from your thread, if i decide its worthy i will make my own. but it sorta is a question about the OP's notes.
Here is a good link to help you determine if any of them are fakes.. http://www.rebelstatescurrency.com/reproductions.html RB
srn9091, the reverses of the Confederate $20 and $50 seem to have had a makeover. The original reverses of those bills were, indeed blank, for I have that $20. Somebody seems to have replaced the backs with pieces of paper to make it look in better condition, "fixing" holes and tears.
I was wondering the same thing, about the blank backs. A neighbor had come across a small bag of these a while back and they all had the blank backs. I was wondering if they were real or not.
they are real, most bills were also hand-cut off of the sheet when they were made back then, and mine is like that. here is a pic of mine (uncirculated):
Thank you for all the interest guys! I have done a little more research on the CSA bills and found out that the early ones did indeed have those black backs, although it does seem odd. I am sort of getting an idea of what the confederate bills are worth, but does anyone have any clue about the first 2 US bills? I am still entertaining the idea of ebay!
The first 2 notes are Fractional Currency. 5 Issues were printed back during the Civil War due to coins being hoarded. Interesting story if you want to read it. The first one is from the 5th Issue featuring William Meredith Sec of Treasury and is pretty well worn. 3 varities exist Red Seal long and Short Key and a Green Seal variety. These run ~ $65- $75 in CHCU The Second note is a 5th Issue as well, the note is featuring Walker..also 2 varities short and long key..also pretty well worn. These run ~ $115- $125 in CHCU RB
