They all have something that catches my eye that makes me believe they are all fake, but something about #1 and 4 make me believe they are correct. Here comes the disclaimer that I unfortunately do not collect gold coins/afford them actually LOL.
Everyone keeps saying #4 looks real but the face is alllll wrong.... The nose is a dead give away. Especially the curve of the nostril... I'll give the others a look in a little bit.. For now all I have determined is: #1 ________ #2 ________ #3 ________ #4 FAKE #5 ________
wow, pretty much sums it up. i can't give a positive answer and usually i am decent with gold fakes. i will just keep scratching my head till, you tell us the answer. so please don't make me wait, i am only 22 and don't want to go bald! my receding hairline is bad enough! this is just why i tell everyone to send in there gold coins for grading and not to buy raw gold coins. if people only buy graded gold it would drastically cut down on the counterfeiters sales and if you get your stuff graded it will keep fakes off the market. most people just get mad at me and tell me "this coin has been passed down in the family for years, i know its real" or "my uncle/grandfather/whatever would never be duped into buying a fake".
While I couldnt spend a lot of time on the coins ,the only one I feel is authentic is the #4 $2.5 . The others are all suspect to me. I did circle the few spots of contention on a couple of the coins.
I will let people have the rest of the morning if they want to participate and then I'll reveal what's going on here.
I would have guessed 1 and 4 were fake, but then I don't really know a lot about this series, so it could be just the opposite. Guy~
Thanks goodbud for your graphics. I am borrowing your idea to show the repeating depressions that I am seeing.
Alright guys, Some of you were able to nail this one on the head. #4 is the only genuine coin in this picture. The rest of the coins were ordered from China on EBay. They are brass that has been plated. The weight of these coins are about half of what they should be. The thing that really astounded me was the color they were able to achieve. Usually gold plated items are easily identified by their color... these are really close to genuine pieces. These things could be dangerous to people who don't know gold in hand never mind a picture on the internet. I hope this has opened a couple of eyes at least to the problems our hobby faces today from the importation of counterfeit coins through such sites as EBay.
According to the Official Guide to Coin Grading and Counterfeit Detection 2nd Edition, I'd say that only #4 is real. All of the other designs look way too weak and crudely made.
I think all are fakes but number 5. I really think the 1909-o and 1929 are fakes because they are key dates so I am "assuming" they are ones to most likely be counterfieted.
Wow coinmaster1 how did you get that right? lol Couldn't have looked at the post just one before you which said it? lol
Nah. I think hes just that good! Alright coinmaster1...im thinking of a number between 1 and 2. what is it?
Thanks for doing this lostdutchman. Very good practice, especially for someone new to the hobby like me.
