Alright gang, This is going to be kinda of a crude test... but I hope my message will ring clear. In the following pictures there are a mixture of both Chinese counterfeits and original genuine coins. From THESE PICTURES ONLY can you pick the real ones out? I have made the coins look just about like they look in hand in my photos. The point of this little experiment is to show you that the Chinese counterfeiters are getting really really good at replicating these coins. Would you be able to tell the difference in an online auction setting or from even a good picture on the internet? BTW the fake ones in these pictures are not even gold... at all. This should be fun. Click the pics to blow them up.. they are nice and big.
Size really isn't important in this situation. The fake ones are the standard size of the coins they are meant to represent. The smaller ones ($2.5's) are just slightly smaller then a cent. The $5's are slightly larger then then a nickel.
I don't collect them but I'll go out on the limb and say they all are bogus. After rereading that some maybe genuine, I would quess from the photos that #4 is good. You really need to work these around under a proper light.
Boy I just don't know Matt - you got me talkin to myself over these :rolling: They all have issues that make me suspicious.
I'm completely new at collecting, but I am going to say 4 is the only legit one. 1,2,3, and 5 are in amazingly good condition. Also... #1- The R in "LIBERTY" is off. Also the stars on the right side of the face are too far from the rim. #2- The two "1's" in "1910" are different. #3- It is an awefully bright color to be that old and actual gold. #4- I think this one is legit, but it is in such rough shape it is hard to tell in the pic. #5- The stars on the left side of the face are misaligned and not equidistant. Like I said, I am pretty clueless about all this and am making a complete guess.
I'd have to jump on the all fake bandwagon. I'd like to know what is going on with number 4 though, that is an odd looking coin.
Without a doubt, 1 and 3 are counterfeit. They exhibit the same depressions. The most obvious is on the obverse between the feather and 4th star on right side of coin. Also notice several smaller depressions on left side near the stars.
#4 is a AU genuine, the others are knock offs. But then again what do I know about gold? I got a gold wedding band.
I just noticed that #2 has the same repeating depressions around the star across from Indians nose. A triangle shaped one above the horizontal line of star on the right side of the star. A second smaller (faint) one is at 1 o'clock from triangle closer to the next star up.
#1 #2 and #3 are no good. #4 looks good. #5 looks good only b/c most 1908 2.5 Ind comes with no breast feathers.
