Is this 1916 D Mercury Dime real, or a counterfeit? This is not for any prize, just to see what people think. Actual authenticity will be revealed on August 3, 2010. You can post your answers here on this page.
Should I say my opinion or wait for others to look at it. The D is touching the leaf. I suggest that CT folks click on page & zoom to 400% and inspect the "D".
I wouldnt buy it, the D looks to fishy to me, with the dis coloring around it. Could be real but would not be the coin for me.
The D does not precisely match either of the four examples in this thread: http://www.cointalk.com/t101697/ You can open each thread in a different window & then sellect the photos in each of the windows & then zoom the photos 400% & toggle back & forth. I don't think you will find a match. The D is touching the leaf in this thread and it appears to be the wrong style D. Just my opinion.
Doesn't look real to me (the mm) the D looks too close to the leaf and looks choppy around it, overall the D looks altered.
I don't think it's real for the following reasons. One, the "D" is touching the leaf. Two, the space between the "D", leaf and stem has parallel lines that look as if they were made by a surface sliding across to where the "D" is. The third reason I will PM you.
The "D" looks good to me. It is close enough to the leaf.. at the right angle with the branch. the right size and rotation... the only thing I would say about the d is the center hole.. it looks different then most. other then that I really can't tell.. it looks real to me, but if it was real why would you post this eheh.. NVM.... it's fake.. look at the ribbon on the bottom right of the handle of the torch.. it is way to low and a different design then a real 1916-D merc... also the "a" inbetween the two "t"s looks funny. and the w on the front of the coin is to low.. but the ribbon is a dead give away... it's fake
it looks real to me. but the d looks messed up.. but it looks cleaned ... but id like to know its composite and weight
And the answer is: FAKE! You can definitely tell by the shape and size of the D, and how it looks like an embossed mintmark added to a genuine 1916 P.
