Hey all, I just picked up a silver 1875H Canadian Dime. After looking it up in SCWC, it goes for $400 in VF-8 condition, but this one looks like it is damaged and possibly plugged from being a part of jewelry at some point. Here are the pictures: Obverse: Reverse: My question is two-fold: What are your opinions of what it is worth? I know it will grade lower due to the damage. And secondly, should I have it slabbed or just pop it into my folder? I only paid $13 for it, so either way, I got one helluva deal. Thanks in advance for your input! :thumb:
On Edit: I guess my question would be threefold if you think it's worth slabbing. Who should I use? If I have it slabbed, I plan on selling it. This would be the very first coin I would send off to be graded. I don't want them to reject it due to the damage.
Did you mean VG-8 ? That is a tough coin to find in any grade. It is not VF IMO. With the damage & wear you might be able to get GD money for it. Without the damage it would be VG IMO. NGC would probably slab it with their purple label & PCGS would probably just slab it as genuine. I don't think you would get more money for it in either of these slabs so just pop it into your folder or sell it raw.
You're right, Collect89. I meant it to be VG-8, not VF-8.I also just picked up an 1891 Canadian Dime in at least VG-8 for $2. It lists for $20. Just had to put that out there.
Education is the key & I learn much from the others at CT every day. Check out this 1885 Newfoundland coin I picked-up last year. http://www.cointalk.com/t55911/
I plucked a few early Canadian coins from my dads collection whilst grading/pricing everything and they're worth like, $35, easy. then there's one rarer one that's gotta be worth at least $100... probably gonna get some of them slabbed.
I'm torn on slabbing them to sell or just popping them into my folder and marvelling in the fact that I got a couple key dates cheap.
