i am trying to figure out exactly how to identify ddo and ddr. in the 1957 penny the 9 5 and maybe r in trust look funny. in the 1956 penny the 9 plus the mint mark looks higher than on other pennies. on the 82 quarter the motto .....is it suppose to be flat like that? also the middle line in the E looks deformed. lastly on the 65 quarter the E in we and the R in trust. if there are anything special about these coins i would greatly appreciate the help. ty in advance bryant
It looks like "IN GOD WE TRUST " is doubled your 82 D Quarter. -A possible double die. Can you take a close-up of it?
Generally not unless the degree is extreme. The die that stamps the coin has the date cut into the die so they leave a raised date on the coin. As the die wears through over-use, common in the 50s and 60s, the edges of the cut date erode or break off. Look at the "9" , in order to make it with the flat area in the loop of it, the die has to have a piece of die steel the size of the inner loop punch the copper flat there. That small piece of steel wears easier and eventually may break off entirely, so the whole loop of the "9" on a coin is filled. The photo of the 82 is interesting, as black-dog mentioned, so a better photo of that might be useful. Welcome to the forum! Jim
ty to those who replied. i am unable to get any closer with my camera. in the event that is a double die, what might it be worth? i have just gotten into collecting coins so any helpful advice or feedback is greatly appreciated.
When I want to focus in on a particular part of a coin for photos, I hold a 30X loupe to the lens of my camera. (without the flash on) A 10X loupe would probably work well too. This is very helpful when you're trying to illustrate an error to someone. The value of this coin -"if it is a double die", probably wouldn't be substancial unless it was an MS coin, or maybe just a lot older, but it is a cool find. Below is a PCGS 1937 Double Die Obverse Washington similar to yours. I wish the close-up of the motto would have been a little larger though. I'll try to find a larger picture later.
ty for the advice. i just ordered one off e-bay. that should work great. am i posting in the right area? or should i be asking my questions somewhere else?
