Sure, we've all heard of Barber coinage - dime, quarter, and half dollar. But a Barber dollar ?

Yes, there is a Barber dollar - or almost was. William Barber designed a pattern dollar as part of the international "metric money" experiment of the late 1870s and early 1880s - the same initiative which gave us the $4 Stellas.

This is Judd-1627, struck in silver with reeded edge (rarity 5).

Also check out the recent Whitman book "United States Pattern Coins" 10th edition - easily found on Amazon and at coin shops. Imagine that - a specialist coin book which doesn't cost more than the coins themselves !

I've never seen one of these before. What is it worth?

Wasn't the Lafayette Dollar also designed by Barber?

Obverse is remarkably similar to the Morgan.

Frighteningly similar. Wonder if they asked Morgan to blend some of Barbers' design elements into his dollar?

I have heard of one being called "Barber"...
I am not an old dollar collector, so don't laugh too hard, but who designed the Trade Dollar?
When I hear "Barber" and "dollar" together, I think Trade Dollar. Am I wayyyy off?

    Another stab in the dark...
    On the reverse:
    "DEO EST GLORIA"

    Glory be to God?

You are correct; William Barber is credited with the Trade Dollar.

Red Book says Barber prepared the dies, but I don't know if he was the designer.

    Thank you.
I guess I am not crazy.
I was pretty sure I have heard old timers call the trade dollar a "Barber" dollar.

    Nevermind...
    I don't think that's right.
Looks like Barber did design that one as well.

    Barber 2, Morgan 1.

See, proof that Barber wasn't a total hack.
