I am still learning, I get the basics, still reading on them. This would help me out Is this machine doubling? I think it is but not sure yet...
went to get it at borders but they didn't have it, had to order it online so I'll have it next week, I got 4 different books now, the one I am reading is on errors, and it explains the manufacturing of the coin to the "varieties". It says that all errors are varieties but all varieties aren't errors. Still got lots more to read. But it is helping.
I am getting it, if it were real it would have notches. I'll grasp it in a few examples. I am researching it now and I am grasping the concept. Some of the real ones are really lovely!
Unless its it a type IV, then the lettering appears thick in some places. You'll see in the cherrypickers guide.
Another thing to remember is that machine doubling is usually step doubling. -The second set of letters actually steps down toward the coin, like a set of steps. With double dies -the second set of letters would be the same height. -Like on the 55 double die cent. Hopefully I'm saying this right. This is just what I have noticed over the years, but I am no expert.
