I won't speak for all U.S. coinage, but I do say get rid of the Zincolns. Heck, get rid of the nickel and the cent and just make two cent pieces. We'll never have to deal with the odd numbers again (money wise that is)...
I think all the coins need a change. Looks, getting rid of pennys, & move away from the $1 bill for the $1 coin. Composition doesnt matter to me either way.
I think debating the metal composition of U.S. coinage is a way to ignore greater issues, including the need for the cent and the overabundance of commemoratives and other coin issues. But, endless debate and issue avoidance seem to be s.o.p. at the Mint today. Dick Johnson, long-time numismatist and author (and medalist, signatureartmedals.com), has recommended getting rid of the cent and nickel, leaving the dime as the lowest denomination coin. One of my issues with that is the problem of making change while the quarter still circulates; the dime and the quarter are not whole-unit multipliers. So, bring on the new 20-cent piece. Or, just the dime and half dollar and whatever multi-dollar coins are appropriate ...
