Pardon my inexperience. I'm seeing CUD on all kinds of different listings. I thank you in advance for the help Esky
It's not an abbreviation, it's just a weird word. cud: An area of a coin struck by a die that has a complete break across part of its surface. A cud may be either a retained cud, where the faulty piece of the die is still in place, or a full cud, where the piece of the die has fallen away. Retained cuds usually have dentil detail if on the edge, while full cuds do not.
Is that like what happened to the 1937 D '3-Legger' Buffalo Nickel? I have a penny error that is 199 ... Where the 4 number somehow just didn't go? Thanks - Esky
No, the 3 legged buff is an over polished die. The missing number on your cent is probably a grease filled die. Keep asking questions, the more you ask, the more you learn.
"I have a penny error that is 199 ... Where the 4 number somehow just didn't go?" Probably a "filled-die" error. Grease or something fills the 4 in the die, and prevents the metal from flowing into that area of the die, when the coin is struck.
I remember when the Delaware quarters came out, two errors seemed to show up a lot... one with the date "199" and the other with the date "999." Both of them were likely grease-filled dies. In fact many of the "199"s were found with a spot of grease where the 3rd 9 would have been.
Are grease filled die errors worth anything? I got the 199 Penny for $2.50 ... Wasn't sure if I overpaid or not, but my son sure loves that coin - so for the price I couldn't resist.
Grease filled die coins don't have much value unless if they take away lots of detail....it IN WE TRUST....one like that would have some value....or IN GOD WE RUST....but normly one missing a number wouldn't be worth much. But it is worth more than you paid because your son likes it...that will mean more than value. Speedy
I take it a CUD is something good that makes the coin more valuable? Sorry for the dumb questions I'm new and learning. I would love an "IN GOD WE RUST" !!! Esky
This coin seems to be and look authentic have some wear. But its in real good condition. but the seller had it listed as a Cud. the price was not for a fake. but it didn't look quite right. which doesn't mean its not.
