Decided to work on putting a collection of Franklins together, MS-63 and some proofs. Not looking for certifieds as much as raws. Spent the last couple of hours at my main dealers place pricing what he has in his store. Have a slip shod start with 3 proofs I picked up for less than book, 56, 61, and 63.
Gotta love Franklins. I'm a junk silver guy, I'll sell my old Walkers before I sell the Franklins. Something about them.
Wow, you got me thinking. I didn't even know whether I had a Franklin set or not. Turns out I do, but only the business strikes. Raw coins which I have got listed as MS so I must have bought them as MS. Nothing spectacular. I priced them all as MS-60.
This is really a good set to work on, however it has been a little more difficult to put together than I thought it would be in MS state. Putting mine in a Dansco album and they look really nice. Still have 8 holes to fill. Have a book by Rick Tomaska - The Complete Guide To Franklin Half Dollars. Not a great book, but good enough to recommend. Sounds like your doing this, but for Franklins, you really need to do some homework on price/value before you set out to make that purchase. Would like to put together two sets in the future, but need to get the first set finished on my small coin budget. Would like to future post on your progress and experience.
You'll enjoy the Franklins. I recently completed a set in MS condition and I only need the 1950 to finish the proofs. I've really enjoyed this coin, and as a new collector, I think the simple design helped me learn about grading.
Most of my collection are of Washingtons, Halves(Kennedy & Franklins), and dollars. I have a complete set of Kennedy proofs, and the Franklins I have are 3 proofs, and a couple raw(G - F) ciruclated halves. We have another coin show coming up in August here, and the last one yielded many collectors with a lot of good looking Franklins for sale at reasonable prices.
Its a fun series to collect. The 1950 in PF 65 and higher is the key date. I will pick up a nice one every now and then just to hoard.
Unfortunately, the 1950 PR-65 is out of my budget for single coin purchases. So that one I will have t search for a lesser grade.
I am working on putting together a Mint State set of Franklins too. I put a bunch of the later dates on layaway and paying one month at a time. Some dates (1948D, 1952D, 1954) I will not upgrade due to sentimental value. (Came from my grandpa)
I love the Franklin halves and have been updating my Dansco with higher graded MS coins whenever I have ths cash.
Think better of trashing someones coins? I really hope you posted that in the wrong thread, but I don't see how that's easily possible...
