Im looking at my red book and it looks like a large date to me. Cuz of how low the 7 is. The 0 sticks out above the 7. Deffinately a large date
The 70 S small date was the final coin I needed to complete my Lincoln Memorial date / mint mark collection about three years ago. I searched high and low, and for the life of me couldn't find a small date (but I did find numerous people selling large dates as small dates, so BEWARE!). I finally found one that was PCGS certified as a small date, in MS 65RD. I paid about $90 for it, but I think it's worth a little more. I bought a 70 S large date that was also PCGS certified as MS 65RD for about $5. So know what you're buying. All that said, what you've got is a large date.
Thank you for all the responses, I was having a difficult time telling the difference. The one I posted was slightly different than the others, but that is probably because it is so dirty.
Yeah, many collectors have difficulty telling the difference. Although pictures are nice, I finally bought a certified one, nothing like having an actual coin to compare. I know someone mentioned in another thread that most of the small dates were found in mint sets. If that's true, very little chance of finding one in circulation. Anyone know the percentage of those found in sets vs. circulation and the total mintage of the 70 small date?
Ken Potter has some good info on this coin... http://koinpro.tripod.com/Articles/1970S1cSmAndLgDtCompare.htm
I don't remember them being that hard to find in circulation, but you know what happens when the memories get old...
