These coins are from a batch dated in the 1950s. I hope that this photo size enlarges OK so that you can see everything clearly & have fun matching the coin to the country.

Shouldn't there also be a "Portugal", since there is a coin with "republica portuguesa" all over it? Or am i extremely wrong and "portuguesa" coins used to be somewhere else?

    Very nice!!

Are these your coins? You don't often see some of these in unc and especially not in choice unc. I'm especially impressed by the Egyptian, Libyan, and Sudanese coins.

    You can’t make-up this stuff.

Yes these are my coins now. I recently purchased a lot of coins dated in the 1950s.

Regarding the Egyptian coin, I showed the seller those three scratches in the Sphinx face & he immediately discounted the coin price precisely 80%. Of course, the three scratches are part of the design.

    In alphabetical order

    A. Australia 6 Pence showing the reverse Commonwealth coat of arms including a kangaroo and an emu. The center shield includes the badge for each of the six Australian states.

    B. Austria 10 Schilling showing the reverse depiction of “a woman of Wachau”. Wachau is a nice area in lower Austria.

    C. Belgium 50 Francs reverse showing the helmeted head. This helmeted head design was also used on the 20 Franc coin of the time.

    D. Cambodia 10 Sen showing the bird statue. This same bird statue design was also used on 19th century Cambodian coins.

    E. Cuba 25 Centavos 1-year type celebrating the centennial birth of Jose Marti.

    F. Egypt 1957 10 Piastres has the Sphinx depicted on the reverse. I don’t know why Krause calls this the reverse as it sure looks like the obverse of the coin to me.

    G. Jamaica 1 Penny coin dated 1950 obverse depicting King George the sixth.

    H. Laos 1952 50 cent piece. Minor coins in the 1950s from Lao Peoples Democratic Republic are made of Aluminum & have a hole at the center.

    I. Libya 1952 5 Milliemes depicts the ruler Idris I. This is a large bronze coin.

    J. Macau 1952 5 Patacas includes both Chinese and Western writing on the other side of the coin.

    K. Mexico 1950 50 Centavos. Like most coins of Mexico, the national arms depicting the eagle & serpent is on the other side (obverse) of the coin.

    L. Sudan 1956 10 Ghirsh. The two common devices used on Sudan coins are either the eagle or the camel with rider.

This fun quiz did not include my favorites from this batch. I’m going to post the entire batch in a separate thread. I had a great time looking through all the coins & determining their countries, denominations, & values.

    Good Question

rdwarrior answered your question. It is a Macao 5 Patacas silver coin. Macau was a Portuguese Colony adjacent to the modern day city Zhuhai in China. Hong Kong was an English colony adjacent to the modern day city Shenzhen in China. Today, there is a high speed ferry that connects the people of Hong Kong to the casinos & night life in Macao.
