I was putting together some cent lots for sale on eBay and a couple of the 1909 cents caught my attention , but only at certain angles. Either I have been staring at this cent too long or there really is a faint "S". Maybe you guys can tell me what you see , Thanks in advance !

What is odd is that I can clearly "D" and I see no signs of an "S" at all.

Denver didn't start minting cents until 1911. I also found nothing on heritage for a rare error 1909 D.

Can't help ya out, but my two cents, is that there is a "D" on that coin. Possibly added later on?

i see what you are seeing, more clearly on the far right bottom picture and the one next to it.

what is even weirder is, my 09-vdb, looks like it has a very faint "S" mm. i noticed this months ago and just shrugged it off, thinking it was my mind just wanting to think it was an S-vdb. i actually still take it out sometimes and look at it. even compare were i see the supposed mm with my S-vdb. i will get pictures, but ours are weirdly similar.

probably just something post mint, but we can dream.

I see several different marks. I thin I see the outline of an S, but not really sure. Maybe it was a grease job...

Tmoney: now that you mention it I do see how you could see a D shape ( that would be a big fat D ). The S mint mark is actually to the left of what you are seeing as a D shape. I wish I had 3 hands so that I could hold the coin at the correct angle to the light while hold the magnifying glass at the correct angle and snapping the photo with my 3rd hand. You know how sometimes you have a really old coin like a Diez Centavos or a Standing Liberty Quarter where the date gets so worn down that you can only see a trace of it at a very limited and specific angle to the light ?
Well the S mint mark I see on this is extremely clear with my eyes , but I have been unable to adequately capture & display it with my photos. Funny thing , this morning I don't see it at all LOL.

I can start to see the S right next to the D now.
    Now, I'm confused. LOL

There's definitely a D MM somewhere in there. I say the second row of pictures is better to view the possible MM.

I see the "D" you guys are talking about, but I think that's just from wear and whatnot... that coin is pretty beat up.

Added S that has fallen off?

Okay then, so how would you explain the "D" ?

Maybe they were tampering with more than just trying to place a fake S on it ?

I clearly can't see a thing. How do you train your eyes? Rookie in training.

I think I may be just seeing things but I changed the last picture a bit.

    It's tiny, I know :(

It seems that there's a bottom half of an S under the D

This coin is so worn out that it is not even worth straining to see anything. But I do appreciate all the feedback and have discovered that if I look too long and hard at something my eyes fail me.
