I have a two pound English coin from 1997. It is supposed to say on the edge of the coin "Standing on the shoulders of Giants." On the coin I have the I in Giants is missing and it does not look worn down it just looks like it was never printed on it. I have no idea if it was a mint error. I was just curious. any info is helpful thanks!

Sounds like a chipped edge die.

The edge inscription is incuse or sunk into the edge of the coin I believe. (I'm assuming it is similar to the one pound coins with an incuse legend and a reeded edge impressed over that.) This inscription is created using an edge die that has raised letters on it. It is possible for this edge die to have a letter chip or break off the die. If that happens there will be no letter impressed into the edge of the coin.
