I've found several threads here about how/where to store your coins, but nothing specific about cigar boxes. Anyone do this, or ever done it? I assume it is a good place to store them as it is humidity controlled and being in my home it is temp controlled (and I have a ton of them and it is fairly convenient). Can anyone think of why this might be a bad place to store them (especially the silver)? Dimefreak's thread- http://www.cointalk.com/t120277/ made me think to ask about this.
Guess I should have specified. I'm only using the cedar boxes. But, that is good info to know as I do have some cardboard ones that I would eventually have started using if I hadn't know that. Thanks for the info.
You always hear about how heat and humidity are bad for coin storage, and though I'm reluctant to put it to the test, I often wonder how ANY coins survived for hundreds, if not thousands of years, before we had climate control systems in our homes and banks. I know my ac had been out for a week here and temps outside were in the high 120's so temps inside were well above that, with 60% humidity. But 60 years ago nobody has ac here or anywhere else, unless you lived in an ice plant down by the tracks. So I have to say, if they were really as bad for coins as they say, we wouldn't have many coins to collect today, which isn't the case. Guy~
Suggestions: 1. Mylar flips 2. 2x2s 3. Airtites(not 100% airtite) 4. Specially made storage boxes made for keeping coins safe (can be acquired from most coin supply outfits).
