fakecoin1.jpg fakecoin.jpg I found this on Craigslist and judging by the condition and the price this must be a fake!! I am going to try and post these pictures, I have never done this before so here goes.

It's hard to tell with pictures but the date really doesn't look right. Although if one could see the whole slab it might be easier to tell.

So what grade are they saying? How much are they asking for it?

They did not list a grade, but they had this and a 1917 Standing Liberty Half in nice condition for $55.00!!!!!!!

Why does it have to be a fake?

1909-S Lincoln Penny, 1,825,000 minted at San Fransisco that year.

Although I strongly suspect you are correct, those pictures just are not big enough/clear enough to see for sure.

Notice the VDB at the bottom

With all due respect, there is no possible way you can see VDB on that penny.

I can easily see it, its the blur on the bottom on the reverse. What else could the blur be?

I can pick out 3 distinct "letters" slightly offset to the left of the picture. Now, if those are not at least supposed to be a VDB, what else might they be?

The coin was listed as a 1909S-VDB, I have never seen one in that kind of shape selling for a ridiculously low price.

It looks counterfeit to me - the detail on Lincoln's head and shoulder appears to be too weak compared to the other areas of the coin. And either way, yes, Numismatist47, the VDB can be seen on the lower portion of the reverse.

If you enlarge the photo, those letters on the reverse are actually LMC. They were engraved by the Coin Collector Show on HSN to label this coin for their buyers as a Lincoln Memorial Cent. :)

But seriously, it would be really interesting to see the rest of the slab.

I'm not saying it is VDB as I know thats where the VDB should be found, I'm just saying if I can't make it out clearly I fail to see who anyone can.

Looks like 3 little dots to me, but we all know it says VDB...

Looks like a recent counterfeit. It would have had to been stored in inert gas for the last 100 years to look like that ( especially the wheat, IMO.

Does the craigslist post show the slab? It doesn't look like a PCGS slab.
