A couple years ago at In-N-Out, I got a 1916 barber dime in G condition, worth a few dollars as part of my change.
I am not as old as some of the folks here so I was not around when the buffalo nickels were first released. I have however found common stuff such as wheat cents, war nickels, a silver dime, or quarter here or there. Most the time I would look at the date to make sure it was not a key then it would go in the box as they were all cirulated. I don't really remember any of the dates on them. I think there was a IHC I found once. PS My avatar if you wanted to know is one of my pattern coins, This one is a Judd 413 this is pretty much like a normal 3cn but struck in copper.
1909 VDB is the oldest coin I've found in years. Pretty sure I found a very worn 1890's IHC back when I was like, 8.
1828 half cent (Cohen-2 variety) with only 12 stars. Apparently, the engraver forgot to punch in the 13th star into the master die.
I found a 1957 Quarter..in my change...um, there was a guy who was metal detecting, I believe somewhere on the east coast and found a 1792 half disme...can you imagine??? I think I would have to go to outback and eat a good steak after that find...lol
Not sure on my part, probably an older wheat cent. My mom found a 1857 flying eagle in change in the 90's though, thanks Mcdonalds! I still have that cent.
i found a 1901 IHC in a big bucket of change. my great grandmother started throwing change in big pepsi bottle piggy-banks, these things were 3 feet tall, i remember seeing them as a kid. she had 5 fully filled and another one halfway. she saved in them from 1920-1960's. she was a coin collector and knew that the modern change in that day could be worth something in the future. well around '94 a year after she passed, some guys robbed my grandmothers house. they got away with the change! no clue how they carried all them piggy banks out or what they did with them, because they got caught. one of the only things we didn't get back was them. i could only imagine what was in the ones she filled up in the 20's and even 30's! who knows there could have been an S-vdb in there, seeing how my great grandfather traveled to cali for his business from 1903-129! o what could have been! but the IHC was the oldest i have found. oldest nickel i have found is a 38-D, oldest dime is a 44 mercury, oldest quarter is debatable.. i found a small hoard of silver washingtons, 3 full rolls. they were given to me, by my girls mom. we didn't know they were silver, but figured they were part of her step dads old collection. if that don't count then the 1914-D morgan, i got in a roll. i don't think i ever got a dollar coin in change or a half dollar for that matter.
Not really in change but i did once find a 1912 nickel in a box along with another dateless that i think is from the 1800's, well i can dream at least.
