Well my grandpa had a ton of old coins that he had saved since he was young. All coins are from before ~1960. So far I have been searching through all of the coins and picking out the ones with mint marks. I am considering selling these coins for their silver value to pay for my books this semester. Are there any coins I should search for that are worth much more than their value in silver weight? Thank you.
Welcome!! That sounds like an exciting project! How many coins are you talking about? Also, what are you doing with the ones without mint marks? A 1921 merc dime without a mint mark (Philly) is worth quite a few dollars more than one with an "S". You would be well advised to pick up a Red Book just so you know what to keep aside. There are varieties and errors to look for. Post some pics of any you have questions about.
Hmm...hard for me to guess numbers but.... ~90 Buffalo Nickels ~250+ Mercury Dimes ~60 Quarters (Liberty and Washington) ~10 Half-Dollars and I can't even guess how many wheat pennies. I will definitely be getting a Red Book. I'm just setting the non-mint marked coins in their own bags as I saw mint marked coins are worth more.
I don't know much of anything about coins but have been dabbling now for some months with my son. If it was me, I would seperate them by denomination and type (cent, nickel, dime, quarter, half). Once I've done that, I would sort each type by year. Go through the book and see what it says for each individual year. Go one year at a time and one denomination at a time. Should be a lot of fun.....Is your name from Half Baked?
That's what I would do first sort by decade then by year. I use papercups with numbers written on the inside with a sharpie. I sorted a whole bunch of wheats this way. Ice
So far I have them sorted into denominations. Within each denomination I have mint marked coins separated..except for pennies because that's ridiculous. Definitely from Half-Baked glad someone knows.
The cents just might surprise you. First get some coin wrappers from the bank. Just ask and they will give you a few. You probably need to ask for some every time you get the chance. Anyway, once you have seperated say some quarters, put them in a wrapper and write on the outside what you have. ie; 6-1958 D, 3- 1958 P (for plain), 2-1957 S. Then when you get a Redbook, you already have a good start on knowing what coins you have and where they are. When sorting, use paper cups or even cupcake pans. The 12 holes in a cupcake pan give you 10 containers for each year of a decade with space for any Funky looking ones and those that look brand new. With the Cents, I always sort by decade, then by year. You can go through a large amount pretty quickly that way. I wish I could help, it sounds like a lot of fun and you might get very lucky.
I saw a cent somehow worth 200k..I'm hoping for that haha Thanks for the advice, I'll let you guys know what I find. I did find a buffalo nickel that had a circle in the indian's neck and a larger circle to the bottom right of the buffalo. It looked interesting.
