I recently came across a 1965 Quarter, that has a larger mint print or an "o" (about half the size of a normal "p" or "d"), and then above that is a very large (almost quarter inch) letter "V" stamped into the quarter. Does anyone have any idea what this is about?

I meant twice the size of the normal mint letter

A picture would help , though there wasn't any 1965 quarter's minted with an O which stands for New Orleans, and as for the counterstamp I would belive it would just be post mint damage ( someone was bored) though I don't have my Brunk handy to see if there are anything that new listed for counterstamps.

I'm almost 100% sure that you're referring to some PMD. People do stamp letters, words and numbers onto coins for whatever reason. It's more common in older coins (19th cent.)

Well, there were never any letters other than the original design ever minted onto coins. My guess would be that the letters look like they're incused (punched in).

In 1965, Philadelphia was represented by no mint mark, so it is a Philadelphia mint quarter with either 2 counter punches, or other post mint damage resembling letters. If it was done by the mint, the letters would be raised like the others on the quarter. If they are incluse ( inward), they are post mint for this issue.

Since there were no mintmarks on coins 1965-1967 it could be a Denver quarter.

Regardless, it sounds like a counterstamp or some other sort of PMD. A photo would help.

I have one of these quarters. It is from 1998. I just got it from a gas station in New Jersey a couple of days ago. I would like to know what it is. The difference in mine is I have two letter V's. I'll post a pic.

It is a counterstamp. Someone just hammered that in it.

Thanks, @green18 - I did not notice and when I got to Cameron's and clicked the link i saw there was a counterstamped coin. For some reason, I thought he was the OP. So I replied to it.

LOL......just can't resist the temptation to 'needle' folks a bit. All 'necros' get a free pass today as it's Christmas. :)
