I'm new to the forum, but I'm sure this has came up in past threads.... What does the effect of plastic have on coins and our hobby???? I've always wondered.
Just call me nobody, I use cash all the time, the only time I use a credit card is for travelling. I really think that those who use those cards just slow everything down. I have about 40 or 50 credit cards all like brand new, I think someday they will be collected as coins and currency are. At one time I was just accepting every no fee credit card that was offered, when they came I put them in an album, but for some reason they quit offerring me those cards
I use cash or debit card...no credit cards here. Like someone already said, my coin dealer offers discounts for cash as well, as the credit card companies are thieves and charge a pretty decent percentage for the "privilage" of it's use. Guy~
My opinion (no hard fact here) is that credit/debit is hurting the hobby in the long run. Coins see less circulation so it's harder for new hobbyists to get "hooked." Plus, the banks look at you funny when you get rolls of coins, too.
I always use cash when I pay for my silver art bars or certain gold or silver coins that I buy from my local dealers and at coin shows. When I win a silver art bar auction on ebay, I use a debit card.
I do too. IMO coins are generally considered an annoyance in commerce. How many people do you see even bothering to count their change? Just a wild guess by me.... One of the reasons the gov is making so many dollar coins so they can just get rid of the small change someday. The gov would prefer to have everyone using plastic now that they have passed the financial reform bill. From what I understand, it opens up all transactions to gov monitoring. Big Brother will be watching even closer.
I own a credit card, but I rarely use it. I like to use cash on my purchases, although most coin purchases are done online. Eventually we will have an all technologically advanced society, and physical money won't exist, but that is just my opinion, and if that is to be true, it will take decades to happen. Credits cards are hurting the chances of coins being minted, I don't think they are hurting the hobby though. When coins are obsolete, they will be worth more. This can help the hobby pick up value.
