I have a gold 1909 2.5 Indian Coin... took some close up pictures through a loop to show wings and feathers etc etc. What do you think the grade is and value? Ignore tiny faded white balls... those are from my camera. Hope I did the picture load ok. Thanks, Eve
Eve, these are one of the hardest series to grade, your coin could be AU or it could be MS. You need to provide pictures of the whole coin, not just parts with your loupe. It creates dark spots on the coin, where there could be areas of rub. From what I can see, your coin has very nice details, but there is a possibility it could've been cleaned at some point. It also appears to have luster, but I cannot tell how much. Better pictures are needed for sure, and in my opinion if the coin hasn't been cleaned, it would be worth getting graded, from what I see.
Okay, I think it is safe to say that coin has been cleaned, and rather harshly so. Also, from the pictures there shows a ring of the extremities of a different color than the middle area of the fields. This two tone nature could prove this coin to be an ex-jewelry piece although I don't see any damage done to the coin. I don't think this coin would grade, and I would say the coin has AU details, as the cleaning job did a number on the Indian's cheek from the first set of pictures, and it could possibly fetch around $200-$250 on eBay. Recent AU58 examples have gone in the $200-$250 range.
It is impossible to authenticate or grade your coin from those photos. Have you tried showing it to your local dealer? IF your coin is genuine the Grey Sheet for it is: XF - $260 AU50 - $270 AU58 - $285 MS60 - $315 MS62 - $550 MS63 - $1,300 MS64 - $2,550 MS65 - $5,000 If your coin is genuine and Mint State it would be worth submitting it to a major TPG.
even if it had been cleaned, wouldn't it be worth it to send it in to get verified? i know gold coins in particular are faked a lot, not sure about this series though.. but with it verified and put on an online auction site, you would think it would have an easier time selling and fetch more money then one raw? i know if i had the choice i would be more confident and bid more with a verified gold coin.
This series is faked a lot. From those pics, I would call the coin real. I guess one could send it in to get authenticated, costing you around $50 or so, and it would be put in a PCGS Genuine holder or NGC would give it AU or MS details. I wouldn't send the coin in, that is just me. To the original poster, you might want to take it to a dealer, and let him authenticate it for you and see if he will buy the coin from you if you are planning to sell.
