Maybe the mint could start minting the 1/2 cent again that might be more appropriate.

Yeah, they make them for collectors, but not because they have to. The way the law reads they only have to make them if the Federal Reserve orders some of them for use in circulation. As long as the Fed does not order any, there is no law that says they have to be made.

It's not a matter of interpretation, it's a matter of wording. The laws says flat out that the unc versions have to be made to meet demand. It further says that the Proof version may be made if they so desire to make them. In other words the Proof version is purely optional and there is no requirement for them to be made at all.

Roosevelt is on the dime because of his close association with the march of dimes for polio research, not because of the new deal.

BQ u are on the money but I am sure the new deal helped and so did being president for 12 years. he might have been the best president ever.......he is in my book Washington was the first so he is famous and lincoln abolished slavery and was assassinated so he is famous but roosevelt did work and he deserves a coin and all the acalades

FDR is on a coin because of his contributions to the United States. He is on the dime, as opposed to another coin or to paper currency, because of his association with the March of Dimes.

Yeah, this thread should be ended. It starts out assuming it's so likely Obama will be assassinated that a coin is already on the drawing board. All this does is give fodder to the wackos – the Secret Service is probably monitoring the thread now.

I don't think it's the American people that drag it on it's the Press trying to boost ratings and sell ad's. And it is a shame how they do that.

To the question though. Yes I do think he would be put on a coin. Kennedy was and times have changed much since the other two have passed.

And I agree with camlov2: "I hope it doesn't happen, and I mean both the assassination and the coin."

I doubt this will ever happen. If it does, it would make some coins prime for melting. LOL

Why in the heck would you think such a thing or suggest it would happen?

    I think just curiosity.
I have not read all the posts on this thread, and don't know where it is going or where it has been, but I don't think he meant anything by it. I think just because J.F.K was assassinated and put on the half dollar so quickly, makes you wonder if our current or even future presidents are killed, they will be put on coinage just as quickly. Once again, I don't think he meant anything by what he said, just curious as to what others would think about Obama being put on the half dollar, if he was assassinated.

Both presidents to die in office after Harding were on a coin within 1 year, Roosevelt and Kennedy. Both have have had unflattering things come out after they were on a coin. I think we should get back to requiring about a fifty year break before even considering them for coinage or bills.

Yeah, bad idea. Funny thing is if the thread was worded just a tad differently it could have worked out rather well.....
