Exactly, and what if on top of collecting assets you could combine that with earning an income? I don't know of anyone who would be against that kind of thing!
My wife don't get it sometimes. She was mad that I spent $250 for 250 Sacagaweas. I splaned that they were worth $250, but somehow she thinks I lost money on them.I have no savings besides my coins, and 16 bucks for a Peace dollar is probably going to be worth at least 16 bucks 10 years from now. Can't say that for a pair of shoes, or a beanie baby or lots of other collectables.
My wife does not care if I collect coins. She wants me to be happy in anything I do. I knew she was the girl for me when I started looking for an engagement ring and I am NOT kidding, she said "I'd rather have a Hi-Def TV." She got both. After 10 years of marriage I was thinking of buying my dream car: a 2007 Lotus Exige S. She helped me pick the color, went with me to look at the car 5 or 6 times and when it came time to order the car I got cold feet. I called her from the dealer and said it was just too much money to spend on myself. She asked me "Would it make you happy?" I said yes and she said "Just order the car!" I went back in and ordered the car fully optioned with "Chrome Orange" paint. Four months later they shipped my car from England. So, no... she does not care if I spend all day looking through rolls of coins or reading Coin Talk for hours at a time. She's great, I love her and she only wants me to be happy no matter what I happen to be "into" at the time. I think she even knows more about Formula 1 racing than I do now. She always asks me "Do we have a race this weekend?" *sigh* Am I a lucky guy or what? Ben
Every time I show my wife a coin I bought she says "let me guess its worth (insert face value)" Its very fustrating...
My dealers know when I buy a coin the holder with the price goes to the garbage and they put it in a flip for me.......But I will say she is very happy I stopped with the trading cards and stuck with just coins. I used to buy $100 box of cards and pull $10 WORTH OF CARDS IF LUCKY
You are definately lucky. My wife is the same way, I guess because she sees the true value in collecting great silver and gold coins!
This is a great thread with lots of interesting stories. Some funny, some sad, a bit like life in general. My first wife understood my passion. As long as I didn't spend too much at once but over the 25 years we were together I ended up with quite a nice collection. At the separation there was no quibbling. I kept my coins and said she could have all the antique furniture. My second wife understands my passion. As long as I don't spend too much at once (mmm...sounds familiar). But she is a collector of Buddha and Buddhist figurines. She doesn't go crazy with them but they generally cost a lot more than any of my coins. So everyone's happy and there's a lot of things we do share besides. And, as an added bonus, I now live on a beautiful tropical island in the Gulf of Thailand and life here is FANTASTIC. So now it's back to checking and cataloging my latest acquisitions (there's only about 25 to do) then out for a few beers and a chat with some other ex-pat friends and then...
What island? My wife is from Lampang, but lived in Chiang Mai for quite a while. We have houses in Lampang still, but live in the States. Be careful of those figurines man. I believe they are more heavily faked than Chinese coins, lol. As an aside, my wife was just given a small collection of them that a friend bought at a garage sale. They are actually old, with tags from European auction houses going back to the 50's. I need to get around to look at them closer.
My wife's great about it. She even takes my searched rolls in to work for me and trades them for new ones for me to go through I'm pretty new to collecting though and haven't really started buying coins yet. Just mainly pulling from circulation at this point. I did recently get 10 rolls of wheaties on Ebay for $20 though, and she was okay with that. She does have her own collecting habits too (antique furniture & carnival glass), so she gets it. I have a keeper!
My wife is totally fine with it. I think it helps that we figured out a budget for ourselves, and part of the budget is money for my hobbies and money for hers, so we can spend it on whatever we want without feeling guilty. If I want to spend $600 on some National Bank Notes like I did the other month, it comes out of my budget so she doesn't have to worry that I'm spending the mortgage payment or something.
As long as all the bills are paid for the week already, my wife is just fine with me buying coins. She even brings me ones from her work at "Wally World". Just like this morning, she brought me home an Unc. 2010-D Dime this morning!! She's a keeper!
Good everyone collects something, so why not collect assets. It makes perfect sense (excuse the pun)~
My wife just sighs and says you make the money so you can spend it on what you want. She gets more frustrated with the research time on the computer than the actual coin collecting. She is a tightwadd even tho I let her spend what she wants on herself. She ussually frequents the pawnshops and yard sales and says (I didnt find anything I wanted but they have some old dimes, dollars or ect. do you want me to get them for you.) Keeper.
Steff, not really a good idea to post that e-mail Addy. You're just beggin' for spammers. PM'ing is the safest way to communicate within our community.
