I've been looking for a nice Capped Bust Half Dollar for some time -- and finally got one today. This is now the oldest coin I own. What struck me was the nice luster and the price was right ($355). I also like the way the dark toning at the bottom gives nice contrast for the date.
thanks dime and bls! Hey does anyone know why my thread shows up as regular type while the other threads are bolded? Am i supposed to manually bold the Subject? I am clueless!
I believe it becomes "unbolded" when there are no new posts that you haven't read. It help you keep track of what you've read and what you haven't.
Very nice pickup. Now you need a book so you can attribute it. I believe there are 49 varieties for that year.
thanks for all the positive comments! bq and mark ... i am a novice with the attribute thing. wow ... 49 varieties ... that's crazy.
They needed lots of dies because they cranked out lots and lots of coins. Lots of dies means lots of varieties. Half dollars - not silver dollars - were true workhorses of commerce. For that reason, half dollars of this period tend to be very high mintage. Millions of them - every one of them made by hand ! Since much commerce was done 'twixt banks and didn't involve the public, many inter-bank transactions involved big bags of coins which were not opened. Thus, many of these 50c survived in high grades. Not so with capped bust 5c, 10c, and especially 25c. Attributing is fun and very educational. Maybe profitable, too... we've seen two r.5+ half dimes pop up in a couple of weeks. An r.5 capped bust half would be a sweet little mama indeed - particularly in AU grade.
This coin is an O-104, which is a very common R1. Its been dipped and has somewhat negative eye appeal, but it will always be special as your first CBH. Congrats!
Beautiful CBH, and a very fair price to boot. Here is my 1825, two years older than yours but at EF40 nowhere near as nice...
I like your 1825 hiho ... it has a lot of character. Anyone else have a capped bust half to post? I bet someone out there in CoinTalkLand has an Unc that would put us all to shame! Let's see some images of your Capped Bust Halves. I fell in love with this capped bust half a few weeks ago (an ebay coin) ... however I was outbid. It ended up selling for $755, a price a bit out of my comfort zone. I thought it was beautiful.
