I know that many here are opposed to the Presidential dollar coin Program and many more dislike Presidents on any of our coins but putting all that aside I would like to know the groups opinion on the question of including living former presidents in the program. The Senate version of the Bill says No living presidents, the House bill says that all former Presidents should be honored. A final bill will have to be hammered out and sent to the President to sign and as Troodon has pointed out, No President has ever vetoed a bill regarding coin design.
Just voted "No Opinion" though I do have one. But since our coins means euros for me, I thought it would be fair to abstain ... In my opinion it would be strange to depict a living person on a coin. I know there have been a few exceptions on US coins in the past, but that number does not really have to be inflated. Christian
G. Washington believed such a notion reeked of a monarchy, and I believe he was right. I don't even care for dead presidents on the USA money, perhaps ideals such as liberty etc are more fitting, but apparently not in this age of idollic hero worship of undeserved individuals.
Since the program is honoring the presidents, I believe that all presidents should be coined. Whether they are dead or alive shouldn't matter, because they were titled "Mr. President" and deserve to be honored just the same as a dead one.
Chrisild,There has never been a living person depicted on an American coin,NOT counting models for iconic images such as Indians,Liberty..etc.It's currently against the Congressional statutes for coinage.Same regulations apply to currency and stamps
I agree even though I don't like the idea of more real people on our coins, but if you are going to honor the Presidents, honor ALL of them. (This includes future President by continuing the series and issuing thier coin after the leave office.) Not true, there are no laws forbiding the depiction of living people on the coinage. You are right about the stamps and the currency though. Not picturing living people on the coinage is merely a tradition.
I'm not sure, but I believe that they mean that there has never been a living person on a US coin that ws released for circulation.
Nobody now has any such knowledge of Thomas Jefferson(beyond meaninglessly being on the USA 5¢ coin, or Thomas Paine. Today they would be regarded as lunatics and shuntered into obscurity by some contrived or real scandal(Thomas Jefferson fathered many many children of colour)
I too do not see any logical reason for not having all presidents on coins living or not. Now I just wonder when the Mint will start putting movie stars on coins like on stamps. We already have Eagles, Buffalos, Indians, Buildings, Bells, hands shaking, boats, trees, oceans, etc. So why not movie stars, boats, guns, cars and living presidents.
I totally agree with this. That asside I believe it is current Federal Stature that no living president is to be on coinage. I to young to remember but I think I read somewhere that Mrs. Kennedy pushed for an exception after President Kennedy was shot. As far as the New President series goes I thought about this for awhile and I will probable collect a set if they come in the annual mint sets. Just like the State Quarters I could care less for anyone of them but will have a full set.
Coins could be used as propaganda. It's been done since ancient times. Coining a living president or living person at some magnitude will make a statement I feel is not proper. However, that's just my opinion

Well at least John Kennedy's relative Eunice Shriver made a living appearance on a decidedly unattractive commemorative. No living person other than Lady Liberty should be on USA coins.
