I wanted to know about what I could get for this worn out 1928 Large S Mercury. The Cherrypicker's guide doesn't list this low of a grade. Thanks
Just for those like me who weren't aware this variety existed. They seem fairly common in lower grades, attainable for 4-5 bucks in better shape than yours on ebay. I'll have to get me one of these in AU or better...
Itg's the large one I believe, I already compared it to the normal smaller one. But it is a well worn coin. Thanks
Yeah, I thought they'd be more valuable too, but they don't seem to escalate sharply in price until you hit MS levels. http://cgi.ebay.com/1928-Large-S-Mercury-Dime-/220636128288 Sounds like a sleeper variety to me.
Probably. As more become aware it even exists. I got it in a flip and put it in the Merc Box for now. Who Knows, the population isn't going to increase. And if the mintage is found to be low enough. It was in a loose coin hoard I had. LOL I just didn't realize the rarity until I got Vol II. But I think I will keep it for awhile. Thanks, Gary
Looks to be the large S considering the serifs are very apparent and the middle is so bulky. Nice find!!!
I am sorry to through cold water on this, but when I overlay the OP's "S" on top of the standard (Fivas), it is a perfect fit for the SMALL "S". Just looking at it, the shape of the top and bottom holes, the angle of the center line, and the breadth of the center line all jive with the small "S" and do not correlate with the large "S".
I guess I had better scan a couple of them together then ? I have a few 1928 S and this one (or maybe one of the others, LOL) certainly appears to be much larger than the other. It is about the same difference as the 1945 S & micro. But again, my vision is not as it was, but I can blow things up very large on this HD monitor now (1000x) to compare them. If I can do it today, I will post the pic later. Thanks, Gary
Here is a comparison of the normal 1945 S mint mark and one of my 1945 - micros S mint mark mercury dimes. Jim
Thanks Jim, I have a set in a double flip for comparison coins and one of each in a folder. They are not as nice as your of course. I was comparing the S for the 1928. I believe I can see they are different sizes ? A scan of both at the same time should show that ? I hope anyway. LOL Thanks, Gary
For now... Wait til I get my hands on a MS6XFB example or three and start pimping them all over the interwebs...
LOL. Partially true. Moreso because of low mintages and high numbers of collectors who need this variety to complete a set. Imagine if 13,000,000,000,000 had been minted ? IMHO
