I've never searched rolls before and I was wondering what rolls were best to buy and what I should look for in them. Also does the bank charge for buying/selling them? Looking for silver coins seems fun and a nice way to pick up some profit. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Perhaps you should try searching the forum. There's been several threads on this exact topic, not including the roll searching thread.

most people who are looking for silver, get half dollar rolls. any walker or franklin half, is 90 percent silver. the 1964 jfk halves are as well. from 1965-1970 the jfks were 40 percent silver. there are a few different things to look at other then the date. the "no fg" and the "hair" one are just a few to look up. you can look at mint marks as well. you can look for proofs as well, with "S" mints. from 02(i believe) and on, the jfk halves were not intended for circulation, so people save them. there are a few other years to look for and people will chime in with them, i am sure. i don't search for halves in rolls, because banks around here won't order them for me.

some banks will charge if they have to order them. i wouldn't expect to make a bunch of money doing this. if you look at the roll searchers thread you will see people only find one or two per $500 box. a lot of the times boxes will have nothing in them. its very rare that you get a box with more then $50 in silver. each 40 percent half is worth about $2.50 or so, and the 90 percent halves are around $6.

if you do start good luck and roll searching is addicting so be careful!!!

since you are just starting out, i would recommend nickels. putting together a set of Jeffersons is not that hard. there is only 1 key, and if you have to buy it, its not that expensive. the war nickels are the only others that are harder to find and i even found a few.

Alright, thanks for the info! It looks like jefferson nickels started in 1938?

Yup, that's when the Jefferson's started. The mint made the silver war nickels with huge mintmarks on the top center of the reverse, so they could easily find them in circulation after the war ended and get back the silver, so those are easy to find. Also look for misaligned die Jefferson's, where the front OR the back of the coin is a bit off centered, a relatively common error for Jefferson's relative to other denominations. A bunch of pictures on this one too, check them out. Post what you find, too, and good luck.

Cool, thanks! I'll look into finding a folder for those. One last question lol, should I buy a whole box? Or just a few rolls? They're a lot cheaper than halves (obviously).

If you get a handful of rolls, you likely won't find anything special and that'll be discouraging. Go for a box, it'll keep you busy for awhile and you'll get a nice sample.

Never knew that was the reason for the abnormally large mintmark on the reverse. Learn something every day. :)

Yeah I get a $100 box of nickels each week and usually find 1-2 Silver ones although I have found 5 in my last box and a half. Also found a Buffalo and Liberty V but you can consistantly find pre-1950's. To keep things interesting I usually pick up $50 in Quarters and $50 in Dimes as well and found 2 silver dimes in last 2 weeks too.
