Can anyone tell me what happened to the D mint mark on the clipped nickel? It looks like the center of the punched D broke off and allowed the center to fill when it was struck. Any ideas out there? Thanks! Ben
I believe this is the mintmark style for nickels of this year. I know on Lincoln cents, from 1975-1979, the mintmark has the square, blob-like shape. Jon
I've had tons of coins from '75 to '79 and a filled mint mark would be the exception for any coin, not the rule. I always see the center of any "D" mint mark on coins. The the S is even open top and bottom. I don't think the mint would let the mint mark be just a blob-like mark on the coin. That's why I asked about this coin. It would be the first "Filled D" I've ever had. It has to be an error, I just wanted to know what caused it. Thanks for trying... but I see open area in the center of all of my mint marked coins. This is my first blob. Ben
Cool. Would it just be die wear? I was hoping it was caused by the movement of the planchet when this clipped coin was struck. Thanks for the info. I'll look closer to see if I can find some others I may have. Ben
