Well you did pretty good in the first grading challenge, so lets throw in a little tougher series. 1. 1831 Half Dime 2. 1827 Dime The photo of the 27 dime does not give it justice. The LIBERTY is sharp along with more details. The Obverse will actually grade better than the reverse. So take that into consideration when grading. The 31 looks just like the photo.
ok nd. here we go. i am going to say on the 31 in between ef and au. i cant say numbers because i have to read more about grading. i say this because i can read liberty. i can see the hair line clearly but it is worn evenly. the rim is bold except on the exurgueto the right on the obverse. letters are bold all around except for e. pluribus unum (high point of coin?) eagles feathers are worn and all but gone on the left wing. i know this is a far cry to reaching the right grade but am i getting a little warmer. LOL
Half Dime: VG-10 Dime: VF-30 I cheated, though, I looked in Photograde. I don't see these very often. They look nice in these low grades. I'll have to pick up a few now.
1. VF-20. I see the ear and the clasp may still be there as well but I am not sure about it. The noticeable wear on the reverse makes it a VF-20 instead of a EF-40, according to my very conservative grading estimations. 2. EF-40. LIBERTY sharp. Ear distinct. Hair above eye well defined. The reverse appears to look sharp also.
Here is a neat little trick when grading Bust coinage. Check out the knuckles of the eagle feet on the reverse. If rounded but still distinct, EF is more than likely. AU and higher will have very detailed knuckles. If blended together but still can be recognized, VF. If gone, the grade will never be better than VG I hope that helps.
