Ok picked up 6 rolls of "customer" nickels at the bank today and got some surprises 1st these... that's a 46s 48p 59d and a 50... p but I kept searching....... Then I got a little excited... as my circulated album needed all 3 of these 1949s 1955p both fantastic finds and "key" (low mintage) coins. But the big big prize of the night... Yes that is a D you see on that 1950 I had a very fun night of CRH
NO WAY!!! You seriously found a 50D while CRH? That's the elusive coin for those of us searching 50-60 years ago! And here you find one within a massive 6 roll search. Someone dumped an inheritance or a stolen bunch of rolls for face. Sweet find @mrweaseluv I'm jelly!
Congratulations. From 1975-83 I was doing a bunch of CRHing. Put together roll sets 1938-60 of Jefferson's. Pulled clipped, off centers, and other errors. A few thousand War Nickels. Never found one 1950-D nickel. Not one. A 1950-D in the wild is like seeing Big Foot riding a Unicorn. Very happy for you.
I would guess someone died, and his heirs were too stupid to see what they had. Check for other rolls from the same person
Holy smokes! I see older Jeff's semi-regularly in the wild... I never saw a 50-D in the wild. That's cool.
I remember the 1950 D being a topic of discussion at our swap meets back in the 50's. If a person had more than one, he could demand some serious trades to let one loose.
Great finds. Finding a 50-D in the wild is wonderful. Over a 2.5 year period of heavy Jeff roll searching I actually found three 50-Ds in the wild, but only one 39-D. Congrats. And you definitely stumbled upon someone's cashed in collection.
It's that Numismatic Circle of Life again. Better to see someone's coins falling back into circulation than to see them buried in a landfill. At this point, I figure that most silver found in circulation (except possibly 40% halves) is coming from coin collections spent/deposited at face value -- in other words, it's already been saved out of circulation once, then returned. For keys like the 1950-D Jefferson, I'm even more sure that's the case. Those may well be easier to find now in circulation than they were in the 1960s, even among all the other nickels that have been minted since.
We need to be diligent these days. With the economy as it is, many people are dumping their piggy banks and hoards for the hard cash they need to stay alive. Keep an open eye.
Yes, looks like a dump that was snatched up in time!! Fun finding a 50D and a couple other lower mintage S nickels. I hope someone isn't wondering where their rolls of nickels went.
easy peasy... they were not loomis or string & sons or shrink wrapped bank rolls... Not that hard to spot, and even simpler... I just ask for customer rolls not bank rolls, the teller knows what i mean lol
A side note on the above post... More then once, I have picked up another CRHs "dump"... that sucks, but you can usually spot when that's happening (lots and lots of the same type coin rolls all wrapped the same way). Honestly, I've found a lot more goodies CRHing by asking for those customer rolls, but there are hazards to that approach too
