First off, I would like to thank\commend all the regular participants in this forum. This has been very informative for me. I fell out of this hobby before computers got so common, and I just found this amazing resource for info.

    My question:

Grading being like it is, and me being a veteran novice, I purchased some PCGS slabs, MS-63,64,65 so I could use them for a reference when estimating grades. I have found this extremely helpful viewing pictures on ebay. I have had good luck on ebay, but I do my homework before bidding.

Is it a good idea to use a slab for comparison? Especially in a coin shop?

I have an Morgan graded ANACS MS-63 that has no definition on on the eagles chest. It falls far beyond the PCGS MS-63.

    Input?

    Thanks

Well it isn't the worst way to start. All MS-63 Morgan's will not grade the same way. It depends on weak strikes and how many marks are on what part of the coin. The branch mints "O", "CC", "S" are notorious for weak strikes. A MS-63 from any of those won't exactly match a MS-63 from Philly. Graders take into consideration weak strikes and worn dies. It is tough to explain in simple terms. I suggest that you pick up a copy of a grading guide such as the ANA or Photograde. These will help you to improve your skills.

Not only can coins from each mint be graded differently but coins from each year can be graded differently as well. But you are on the right track - comparing a raw coin to a graded coin can be a good way to go in a general sense. But to make your decisions as accurate as possible try to compare apples to apples - and 1885-CC to an 1885-CC and an 1881-S to an 1881-S.

But studying a grading guide and talking to others who know how to grade is the best way to learn.

Find some of the better pictures of slabbed NCG or PCGS Morgans on eBay can also be helpful.
