Just got this from my Mother who got it from her Mother. Thought the book itself was as interesting as the coins inside. Has 5 Mercurys and almost all of the other dimes are silver dimes. Just helped out my collection. Just thought Id share. :goofer:
Cute. Curious though if the coins have fingerprints from being put in the holder or if the coins have been in this holder decades, is any tone on the bottom obverse or reverse side of the coins?
You can see what looks like toning on some of the roosies. Given that they've probably been in there for many, many years, I'd bet the toning isn't attractive. The backs might be interesting though.
It appears to me that all coins were pulled out of circulation. I imagine this would be given to a child to help them learn to save. So the coins themselves all appear to be circulated, at least to me. Alot of the silver have started to get a nice yellow tone too them, but it doesnt appear specific to the section that was inside the flap. I imagine these have been in there for at least 3 or 4 decades as my mother isnt a collector she just saved it because it was her mothers. Edit: Oh it was stored in a ziplock bag which might have helped protect the coins a bit from the elements.
I also noticed the holder itself says: ©1954 A good 56 years worth of potential time for some of those coins to have been in that holder.
Okay, I'm confused. Can you tell us more about the Mercuries in a dime holder which are not silver dimes?
Really cool actually, I've seen other things like this before. I think they are kinda neat! Thanks for sharing!
I agree...thats a really cool piece. I wouldn't remove the coins as they add to the story. I've always been a fan and collector of odd and curious coin folders and albums. Nice to see one I haven't seen before. Guy~
Yeah, I plan on leaving them in, Im more of a Nickel and Cent Collector so I really have no reason to remove them. Quick Question to everyone. Is the best way to store something like this in a ziplock or does it make any difference (in regards to the coins). Thanks!
Just thought Id share. :goofer: Alright!! I'll take two silver dimes!! Just kidding with you of course!! Nice holder for sure!!
Coin savings folders like that were very prevalent back in the 50's and early sixties (they can also be found both earlier and later but not as many of them.) They were a common item for banks to give out to the children of their depositors. There are probably hundreds if not thousands of designs.
Banks used to do cool stuff like this to encourage saving. I have a nice dime tube with a piggy-bank-type hole in the top with a savings & loan logo on it. Now they just try to get you to set up a monthly auto-debit into your savings acct. Not nearly as interesting
