I was going through some stuff the other day and stumbled upon this coin. I typically like 1970s stuff in its original packaging, but this coin may be worth sending in and selling to a registry set collector.

Anyone want to offer a grade or an opinion? The marks are on the holders and unlike many brown box Ikes, this one is not cloudy and has not been dipped. The first picture is detail on Ike's bust, it's hard to see in the wide pic.

    What say you? Grade anyone?

Nice! I'm not a huge Ike fan so I can't give much of an opinion on the grade, but that is a beautiful coin. It makes me want to re-evaluate the few Ikes that I do have.

Are you sure that mark on the chin is on the plastic? What about that black mark that is southwest of the earlobe and the diagonal line on his temple? It looks like there is a slight amount of haze around "BERT" on the obverse.

  5. Wow! Really nice Ike. I would say an easy 69 UC. TC

    that is a proof....

Really! How astute you are. ...although the OP solicited grades from Ike Fans. If you are indeed an Ike Fan, what say you about this coin's potential grade?

I'll say it could receive a TPG grades:

    1973-S Silver PR 69 DCAM
    from PCGS

    and

    1973-S Silver $1 PF 69 Ultra Cameo
    from NGC.

Beautiful find Mike! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Terry! I like Ikes! I'm working on a PCGS graded set of silver "S" mint mark Ikes from MS 65 to 69 & PR 65 to 69, one in each grade. No varieties or toners at this time. So I've looked at many graded Ikes.

I think it is a Proof 68 because of the light scratches near the nose unless that is the plastic

All of the marks are on the plastic. There is one good catch, tho and cpm is the only one to have noted it. There is a place on the chin where if the coin were uncirculated I would say it was a tiny contact mark. But this coin is a proof and so I don't think that to be the case. Other than that one small as it is, the coin in-hand looks to be perfect. No haze and beautiful cameo. My guess is that the mark may keep it at PF-68 DC (nice call Reuben) and that's the way it goes. I will have someone I know look at it. He knows a thing or two about Ikes.

There is also a definite nick of some sort, vert small and round on the head. These coins, when they are high grade proofs, are some of the glittery that the mint ever produced. Take a quick movie of it like this one

In this case, the fan in the reflection is easily 8 feet from the coin
