I collect a bit of currency on the side, but admit I have very little in the way of home references to help me on this one. I've been assembling a display for loan to a local museum on money of 1908 to commemorate the opening of the El Garces Harvey House/train depot, and have gathered all the 1908 dated coins I need. Then I thought it might be interesting to include some paper money of the time as well. So, what would some common banknotes have been for 1908? I'm not so much concerned with origins as long as they're US bills, as travelers arrived from all over the country. And I need to keep it inexpensive if possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Below are some Series to look out for.

The Beebe Collection of the ANA is online in the ANA Musuem. This should provide a great resource for notes of the era you are seeking:

    • Series 1905 Gold Certificates

    • Series 1906 Gold Certificates

    • Series 1907 Gold Certificates

    • Series 1908 Gold Certificates

    • Series 1902 National Bank Notes -- The Third Charter Period
(There are date back notes that display dates 1902 and 1908 on the same notes)

***Please note that just because the series name displays as a date, that sometimes the note was not actually printed/distributed into circulation in that year.

We also have the Second Charter National Bank Notes that switched to date backs in 1908 with 1882 and 1908 on the back.

By the law of 1900 all denominations less than $10 had to be Silver Certificates (with the exception of a limited number of $5 National Bank Notes) The Act of 1907 amended this to include United States Notes, but only the Wood Chopper $5 of series of 1907 were issued before 1917.
