well most people dont collect coins after the initial fancy goes out the window. and its not only true for coin but for most hobbies. our beloved Gd himself is also no longer a collector so there is no point in wasting hours and hours learning to grade and still be mediocre at it if its only going to be for a few months. its better to ask the experts. look at the forum more or less a serious place for the collector but here also we only have one in 10 members lasting the distance from 10k we dont even have 1k active. peter or grandpa can correct me if i am wrong.
That may be the case from what you have seen or from what the forum shows but I dont do things half heartadly. I wanted to get into something that my son and I could do together and this is something he has always had a passion about. He has always enjoyed looking and messing with coins. We have had a lot of fun roll searching and trying to put sets together. We may nver be the level of collectors that some of yall are but this is not something that we will be a flash in the pan. I dont plan on going anywere and am not the type of person that starts and stops things just because the newness wears off. Before I get into something, I research and study and make sure it will be something that I will enjoy doing for a while becasue I do not want to drop a lot of money into something to turn around and sell it off in a few months. Dont take my word for it though, come see me in a few years and we will see were I am at in the collection then
I think I've told ya before Heath - read and re-read everything you can find here - Coin Grading - you gotta study this stuff, know it backwards and forwards. And your two madatory grading books - the ANA guide and the PCGS guide - those things become your Bibles. There is not a single day that goes by that I don't get both of mine out. The start going to coin shows - look and study every single coin there.
ok this is the time for gd story again tell us of the first serious coin you bought the whole experience and the book you read before it and how it helped you.
Boy Howdy ! I can't even remember that far back ! Just ask Frank - he'll tell ya :rolling: BTW - gonna gectha for that Frank :hammer:
Stupid question, but if you cannot tell the difference between 69 and 70 why do you want to pay the price difference? Even if it is for cherry picking, is it just say that you own a 70 even though you cannot tell why someone says its a 70? Sorry if it sounds like a smart edited comment. This is just the reason I left American numismatics, so much attention on tiny, and to me, meaningless differences in grade. *Sorry if this post offended anyone. To each his own and whatever you wish to collect is great for you.*
We have a long thread on this in the archives with a lot of examples and quite a few discussions Search it out. Ruben
