Todays Newp U grade

I just got the cent in the mail today, and quite frankly i am ashamed at my photo grading skills. I will be the first to admit that this is not a series i am familiar with grading, and furthermore i owe some apologies for my reaction to your honest opinions. Tmoney, Badthad, good eyes. The sellers pics hide some major hairlines from cleaning. It has also been dipped too heavily IMO. I was going to return this one, but i think i will hold onto it as a reminder of a lesson learned. I have purchased over a hundred coins online over the years, but this time i am eating a crow sandwich. I ignored my better judgement, and scorned your opinions. Luckily it was only a 25 dollar lesson, but the pride factor probably cost me a little more . I will post some pics this weekend when i get a chance.

Don't sweat it
I'm not one to hold grudges over anything really.

I've seen thousands of coins on the computer, and then with a few I buy them and see them in hand, you learn to develop a skill for knowing what a coin will look like from photos. When you are in front of a computer as long as I have been, you find lots of different ways to determine different things, although even with all that practice, deciphering what a coin will look like in hand or will grade relies heavily on the quality of the photos, and this time the quality of the photos were poor, you thought you didn't see something we thought we did.
Buying coins online can be an unpredictable and risky business.
Lesson learned about photo-grading and not at a bad price at all People have thousand dollar mistakes...just be lucky this isn't one of those.

 

Well here are my pics of the same coin. You can see the polishing marks clear as day. I'd call it whizzed. Too bad since this was probably a decent coin before it was cleaned. Sellers pics actually catch the color a little better. BTW seller made good on the deal. Now i see how these guys can do this and still keep 100% feedback.

 

yeah, big difference between the two sets of photos. you see this quite a bit on the bay. Thats why you should buy from someone you trust or with a good return policy.

 

Nice looking '09 VDB, detail-wise. Surfaces on the initial pic look like it has been dipped out or polished... hard to tell with the lighting, unfortunately.

 

You are man of character. Not many folk would have the guts to come back....I give you props!

Really too bad about that poor coin. It was a high grade coin before some idiot polished it. Not sure about the reverse, it looks pretty original. Those lines appear to be die polish lines (not silver polish). They do not appear to be on the devices as best as I can tell. Looks to me like someone had it in a Whitman and just went down the line with a cloth and some polish. Another one bites the dust.

 

To say that the seller juiced his pictures is putting it mildly.

I'm afraid they're correct on their assessment. The reverse is clearly evident of the amount of wear and the brightness of the coin for that amount of wear is not consistant. It was cleaned, rather harshly. You can also notice cleaning on the obverse, off Lincoln's shoulder under liberty.

 

The hair jumped out at me right away.

 

Be very careful with angled photos. When done by experienced e-bay sellers, they are almost always done with the intent of hiding problems.

On the bright side, I presume you can return the coin, so just count this up as an inexpensive lesson in the follies of buying raw coins on eBay with angled photos.

Thanks BadThad ! I'm here to share my experiences and learn from others. This one goes to show just how much you can hide in photos, as well as how good some of you are at spotting it. I certainly learned a lot from this one.

Mike, there are many here who speak the same as you. If not for the patience and knowledge generously supplied by folks such as you I daresay people would have left these forums ages ago.
