Australian 30th Anniversary Decimal-Coinage Commemorative Coin In 1996 collectors of Australian proof silver (0.9990 oz. ASW) Dollar commemorative coins received a treat. A Dollar was struck to commemorate the 30th Anniversary of Australia's decimal coins. The coin, itself, features seven coins on its reverse. An image of the reverse of Australia's One Penny coin bearing a hopping kangaroo facing right was placed in the middle of the map of Australia. The other six coins which are decimal coins are placed in denominational order progressing clockwise beginning to the right of the map. Decimal coins were first minted in 1966 First up is Australia's 1996 Dollar Commemorative (whimsicalnotions.com photo): http://www.whimsicalnotions.com.au/product.php?id=930 Here is a photo showing both obverse and reverse of the Kangaroo Penny (worldcoingallery.com photo) which was first struck in 1938: http://worldcoingallery.com/countri...m36 1 Penny (1938-1952)&query=Australia km 36 As previously stated decimal coinage started in 1966.
