It's a nice rendition of the design but i need a BIG silver hunk to fit my type set. 34mm minimum. I dont think anything was made like that with this design.

Actually, my favorite is probably the Churchhill coin, but i don't own one.

Get the 10 francs variety then. Same design, diameter 36.9 mm. Keep in mind, however, that all those silver pieces were part of a series (History of French Money) of collector coins, and not issued for circulation. Should cost roughly 30-40 dollars ...

Unfortunately, the French mint has become like the Canadian and Pobjoy ones. All sorts of useless "collector coins!" Back in the pre-euro days, the FM would issue circulating commems on occasion...but they would also issue über-expensive unc sets that would have some "circulating" commems that were never circulated and a bunch of other set-only issues (they stopped minting franc coins in 1978, except for sets, and a complete set will cost as much as a bungalo in LA)...

 

Those are stunning and I wouldn't mind broadening my French Sower Toned Collection to the French Toned Collection.

Fine pieces everyone !!

I only collect world stuff so this is quite a hard choice to pick the ideal candidate. Like most this choice is defiantly temporary but I think we can all agree that these are some attractive pieces , Viva la France.





Note that the San Marino 20 lire 1935 R has a mintage of 10,000 pieces.

 

Very nice 1919 1 Franc. I have one of the same date as well. Love the Sowers.

 

my favorite is a 1967 Canadian Silver Dollar. It's honoring the Canadian Centennial and it has a goose in flight on it rather than a canoe. Geese have special meaning to me and that's why this is my favorite world coin.

Although the 1920s gold francs are nice too!

 

Hmm. The French mint does pretty much the same what it did in the pre-euro days. Have a look at any decent coin catalog and see what they have issued since about 1990. Lots and lots of 100 francs coins, at prices that (as with US silver dollars) are way above the face value. But I agree, the volume of French collector coins - whether in the last ~10 years of the franc, or in the euro years, has been deterring.

Of course you can still get commemorative coins (€2) from France. The latest one, commemorating the June 18 Appeal, came out very recently. Also, some silver and gold collector coins http://www.monnaiedeparis.fr/collectionneurs/EurosOrArgent.htm are even issued at face.

Guess the "1978" was a typo. They made the franc and centime coins until some time in the mid/late 90s. Germany did the same thing; would have made no sense to produce circulation coins that become useless just a few years later. But apparently collectors want such annual sets ...
